It real depends on the size. If pentax decided to make "limited" as a line of compact pancake lenses, and this 20-40 zoom is the first one of limited zoom, I can see the sell point. And it makes sense the "limited" size and aperture for a real pancake zoom.
taking into account the Russian rumor that a redesigned k-02 is on the way, with presumably smaller size. This zoom is great for a small mirror-less camera as a "walking around" lens.

VS 16-50 F2.8
Could be smaller
Could be more reliable AF motor
Could be sharper
Could be cheaper

VS 17-50 F2.8
Could be smaller
Could be cheaper
Could be WR

VS 17-70 F4
Is faster on the short end
Could be sharper
Could be smaller
Could be WR
Could be more reliable AF motor

VS 17-70 F2.8-4
Could be sharper
Could be smaller
Could be WR
Could be a better AF motor than the Sigma HSM in the older 17-70 F2.8-4 because that motor wasn't the fastest.

To me, this lens can only be great if:

A) It is sharp wide open with very good flare resistance.
B) It is significantly smaller than the 17-50s, and maybe have an in-built hood.
C) Has a very fast focusing DC motor because the smaller size and construction will allow for lighter focusing elements.
D) Is actually weathersealed.

Hopefully all three work out.

The FA 20-35 already seems to tick these boxes,
so the prospects for the Limited zoom look good here.

+1

That said, hoods for zooms are problematic.

The ideal is found with zooms that extend towards the wide angle end,
while the hood remains fixed to the outer body,
so the hood coverage always tracks the angle of view.

If that isn't going to happen,
something like the extending hood on the DA 35/2.8 Ltd Macro,
where you can retract the hood to avoid shadows on extreme close-ups,
could also work.

If the "WR" (doubted by the rumor poster) and "DC" designation are real,
then these two points could be met.

No, DA, not D FA.

Don't sell your FA 20-35 (if you're lucky enough to own one)!

Fantastic! I was expecting an F:3.5 lens. 2.8 is surprisingly fast for a Limited zoom. I also expected an odder focal lenght range in the Limited spirit; someting like a 22-44
I will buy this and the 15 Limited.

I certainly hope it doesn't flare as much!

I thought that was the focus confirmation.

All this time I thought that was the artistic effect and desirable.

Well yeah, a limited (ahem) amount of flare, used sparingly, can add interest. Sometimes.

But . . .

(That's a Sigma 24-60 and not the DA*16-50, but the point remains.)

IF it's Limited-small and Limited-IQ, I will be very interested. IMHO, the DC and WR potentiality is somewhat surprising to me. Those seem like features that would detract from one of the DA Limited series' calling cards--small size. We'll see what the actual specs are soon enough. Provisional thoughts on a provisional rumor--take them for what they're worth!

Stupid range for APS-C IMO....hopefully this is FF compatible and signs to come that FF is coming.

I think if Pentax wants to be taken seriously as a pro APS-C gear (which they are trying to do with K-3) they need to update 16-50/50-135 ASAP which are the bread and butter lens for any system

It is a desperate "bridge-the-gap" measure. Pentax is designing one lens that fills the obvious gap in the DA Limited range that had not be filled since 2008. That gap is the most interesting 20–35mm in APS-C (30–50mm in FF), but it seems in this design they could squeeze up to 40mm (60mm in FF), still keeping the design small and stopping at f4 (if true).

So it won't be FF compatible apart form the possible crop mode on a possible FF camera.

Don't put too much stress on the FF — DA Limiteds will never happen again in the FF offer, if it ever comes.
