Call me picky, but the lens seems quite pedestrian, not worth the high price being demanded.

I dont call you picky at all...it is a premium price, with a limited range and not very fast. With those 3 parameters, it should have superb IQ. I haven't seen that,

I dunno. I haven't downloaded any files, and until I do so, I can't say anything about the sharpness.

In terms of rendering, it looks good to very good.

It's slow, yes, and it's moderately priced, so is it worth it? Not to me, but it definitely would suit many people.

One question...
Does this 20-40mm lens covers the FF image circle?
To owners of this lens, can you confirm this like trying to use it or just mounting it on a Pentax 35mm film SLR to see if it has a dark circle/border at 20mm?
Just now, I just tried mounting the DA 18-55mm kit lens on a K1000 body, the dark circle/border disappears at 20mm... That's why I'm curious...
Thanks in advance!

If it doesn't, then the FA 20-35/4 is an option.

Its filter size is 58mm, bigger than the 55mm on the DA,
so I suspect that there has been some miniaturization
in the design of the new lens.

No it doesn't. I tried it on a MZ5n and the corners vignette at near 20mm.

Nope this lens is NOT based on the FA20-35.

The designs appear to be similar based on:
http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/lenses/zooms/_optics/20-35f4.jpg
HD PENTAX-DA 20-40mmF2.8-4ED Limited DC WR / Standard-Angle Lenses / K-mount Lenses / Lenses / Products | RICOH IMAGING

The lens group in front of the focal point on the 20-35 may have been removed and redesigned into the element behind the focal point on the 20-40. It might just be that similar focal ranges produce similar designs, however.

You can say it about any 50, 35 or 85 mm lenses, for exampe.

Ok, interesting. The shematic drawing shows also an aspheric element, which I can't remember of having been mentioned somewhere else?
Btw. - love the rendering!

Have some time with the lens yesterday, feel rugged, rather heavy (may be same as 77 or 31, but build quality may lag behind the two lens with more plastic parts, I think, except with WR), sharp from 2.8-4 (to my eye), look nice on K3 silver
Offline - Ch?p m?u "teen" cng Pentax K-3 - Page 3
Will be officially released by end-Dec here in VN.

I just guess there is some inside, under the metal (aluminum) barrel, when holding it along with the 31 and 77, just pure guessing since it's a little bit lighter than the two other high-grade lenses. But if you own it, you have a better insight than mine for sure .
As a K3 owner, I like it a lot as a wide angle lens, especially the silent AF and the WR which will enable me to shoot under almost all weather condiions. Considering buying it when it is released.

For those of you interesting in this lens' flare resistance, I would say it isn't bad. This is a pretty severe test.

By comparison, a similar shot with the SMC DA 21mm limited. Like the other HD limiteds, the starbursts of the HD DA 20-40 limited are just not the same....

But stop the zoom down to f/16 and you get a better starburst effect, but still not quite in the same league as the DA21.

Flare test f/16
The calf is present in the 20-40 picture. That proves the 21 mm to be a inferior lens

...!
indeed...
I wonder if our new pending FF will have auto sensor crop back from any vignette
makes it less of an issue ?
