I think you'll need to wait until the Government repeals the Laws of Physics.

Heck I have seen 140mm front-element-lenses that take 42mm filters.... so it is possible...

I suspect many users will have migrated from the 18-55m kit lens, probably to a 16-50mm f2.8, either the Tamron/Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 or even the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-f4
In most cases I can't see a place in the bag for a 20-40mm it seemingly came out of nowhere, and nobody was asking for it. Hence my comments on being a strange choice from Pentax

I'm not entirely convinced limited zooms are wanted by most Pentax users.

Why do you consistently argue against this lens just because it doesn't fit in your bag? If most people prefer the 16-50/17-50/18-50/17-70/etc, those options have been around for long time. Most of what I shoot for myself (outside of client work) is between 20m and 40mm. I hike a lot and need a lightweight/rugged kit, and it seems like Pentax designed this lens exactly for me. Just because it isn't for 80% of the lens-buying population doesn't mean Pentax can't built it.

Neither can I. It's stuck on my K-50.

I believe the DA 12-24/4 is the lens that replaced the FA 20-35/4.

In terms of equivalence, maybe, but both those lenses were offered in parallel for several years.
The FA 20-35 was only pulled (from the Japanese website) when the DA 20-40 appeared.

Pentax's lens roadmap is quirky. There really is no fast DA normal prime. You can make do, but your compromising something. The 31mm is an FA lens and doesn't have full time af override. Beautiful lens though. The 35mm Macro LTD is a 2.8.

So a 33mm F1.4 DA* would satisfy the need for a fast normal and still be quirky...

The DA 35 2.4 is the "fast" normal prime, at least it is for me. And I have a K20D which isn't that great in low light, but I still find the "plastic fantastic" to be good enough for what I want it to do, and is great at 2.4, so no real need to stop down unless one wants super-sharp.

What I would like to see is an affordable wide angle lens, so that like in the old days, we could have a 28-50-135 equivalent prime set (the Samyang 85 1.4 being the affordable tele prime for APS-C). I guess the reason we don't is the amateurs like me are mostly into zooms now, and the enthusiasts that demand quality go for the limiteds and * lenses (and, unlike me, have the budget for it).

If they reused old, good optics for the DA 35, 40 and 50, I really wish they would have a DA 20 based on the old FA 20 2.8, but the problem is that it would probably be as good as the DA 21 Limited, and also cover FF... so no way Ricoh is going to release that.

I make do with the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 for my fast normal prime. But I still have the DA 35mm f/2.8 Limited. Different tools for different jobs.
