"The focus area that is not seen much, this lens, it is going to be a lens quite unique."

No, rather, as I've suspected ever since it appeared on the roadmap,
a reincarnation of the FA 20-35/4.

So not yet clear if it really will be WR.
Being in a drip proof structure is never a mistake.

Awesommmeee, DA 20-40mm WR Ltd! The first Ltd zoom! Too bad it's not 16mm, but I'm not complaining. This fills a hole in the lineup of an upgraded wide kitlens that's not DA 16-50. I dont mind the variable aperture. Lets see how small pentax can make it

This + DFA 100 would be a great, do it all kit.

My line up is Sigma 8-16, DA 18-135 , which is really strong from 20-40, 21 ltd and DA 35.2.4 and 40 xs. If you hand me that lens and tell me it's free, but I have to use it, I'll probably hand it back and say "thanks but no". Sigma releasing the 18-35 1.8 is emphasizing that what I don't have in that range is sub ƒ2., and this does not address that. At some point someone is going to sell me a lens. It's not looking like it's going to be that lens.

The DA Limited lenses were never intended to be fast.
Compactness and high IQ are the design priorities.
The FA 20-35 is no longer than the DA 18-55 kit lenses,
so if this new zoom at that size offers high enough IQ
(resolution, rendering, flare resistance),
I'll certainly be interested in it.

+1

I'm interested in how small they can make it. If it's FA 50 size, I'll be real happy.

If it extends I really hope it extends towards 40mm. The 20mm will be much more useful for street.

Hoping that like DA 15 and its mates, it will be another lens that Pentax and only pentax has.

Realistically, if the new Limited zoom at 24/3.5
matches or beats the DA 18 - 135 at 24/5.6,
that will be a worthwhile improvement IMHO.

Why the 18-135 at 24/5.6? It's already that small at 24mm?

No, but that seems to be where it gives acceptable sharpness across the frame:

I don't know. It was bound to have a limited range. But 20mm to 40mm feels really limited -- I would have preferred 15/16 to 40. Easier for me to stick the DA 40 in my pocket and DA 15 on my camera (or vice versa). Maybe image quality will be awesome, but hard to believe that it will be that much better than current primes (or smaller for that matter).

You already have that lens you described though, it's called 18-55 WR

Can't fight physics I think, 18-55 is as small as it's going to be already. I think this lens is not meant to be DA 15 replacement, but as a single lens solution for people that usually carry DA 21 and DA 40

Well, the 18-55 is not f2.8 to f4 and it isn't usable wide open (my experience is that it needs to be shot f5.6 to f8 for good sharpness).

I would assume this lens will be good wide open and will be small and flare resistant. But I am not particularly interested.

A 20-60mm would have been my choice (oh I'll bite: especially an FF version as the new 24-70) and I had been thinking WR and f/3.5-4.5 for size. DC would be very nice! So many compromises to go wider than 20mm and keep it small as a zoom. Ah well, guess I should have gone to that meeting..

Not sure why it couldn't be 2.8 throughout the range?

What does this lens offer over the DA* 16-50mm f2.8?
