Is it me, or are we seeing a trend with sigma making large lenses:

Boys and girls, please forget about this lens being WR and even having DC. It just ain't gonna happen, sorry. I really wish this was the case but WR and DC in a Limited lens is highly unlikely.

The new Zeiss 55mm 1.4 was build according to motto - no matter how big and heavy, if the IQ is outstanding.

IMO, Sigma has something similar in their head.

8-16 feels like da 55-300 to me, height is about same. 8-16 feels good to take photos, not heavy.

But about this new 20-40, i really do not think i will find good use for it. For landscape its just not wide enough in most cases. I would take da 16-50 for lanscape, price about same i think. For people and general use its too short, there is 17-50 f2.8 lenses much cheaper than this or sigma 17-70 is very good. Or even da 18-135 wr would do better for me than this. Maybe after i seep pics taken with his new lens, i will change my mind

I completely agree. I would love to be proved wrong though....

With Ricoh running the show this just might be possible - however I do agree to an extent - the the lens roadmaps that have been released so far there is no indication that this lens will be WR. But on the other hand, they have been changing lens specifications on that roadmap for a while now initially this lens was listed as a * lens, now it isn't.

I still think that lens is simply a re-purposed Medium format lens design.

That is true to some extent, but that is what the Zeiss guy said:

In that case, I am not buying it. I doubt it will be much (if at all) better than my 31mm Limited which is way faster to boot.

What a curious lens, I don't entirely understand who this lens is targeted at. For portraiture I would prefer something faster (F2 would have been nice) and longer (50mm) and for landscapes I would have expected wider. I guess they are going to be doing something with the DA* 16-50 otherwise this lens would basically be replacing it if built to my prefered specs. I will be interested to see if this gives the 40mm limited a run for its money, the bar has been set pretty high.
This is a classic Pentax lens. They have made plenty of not so fast lenses through their history with awesome builds, sharp from wide open. But the easiest way to make a lens smaller is to limit its aperture. People are a little obsessed with fast lenses these days, but not everyone needs a Sigma 18-35 f1.8 zoom.

Let's see what we have here:

20 - 40mm... perfect focal lenght for street ph. and all around reportage,,, but let me say... I can do it with the 31limited 1,8 (may be the same size but FA, no quick shift focus, no DC) or with the DA-L 35 2.4 (cheap built, no WR, no DC) or 35 Limited (no DC!)

F/ 2.8 - 4... to be a "hight leve zoom" it's not much, but it's because of the "compact" limited format. I' hope that the 2.8 is not only at 20mm but last until 35mm al least. And it HAS TO BE very very VERY sharp from 20 to 40mm and from center to borders, at total aperture... I'm still disappointed with ma 21 limited "3.2" and "not razor sharp" situation until f5.6. Tha't why I HATE pancake lens and prefer a compromise between size, maximum aperture and sharpness tha privilege the last quality.

limited format in a zoom... perfect for street ph. and reportage as a compact light allaround zoom lens

DC AF motor... perfect! Silent, fast, efficient... on the 18-135... it may be even faster on a 20-40mm compact zoom! ...it's such a perfect silent AF for Street ph. and reportage

WR... great feature for an allaround compact lens to bring allways with you

HD... a better coating on a zoom is a great improvement of immage quality... and if it may be a step better than the still unbeated SMC... it will do very very well!

PRICE...?!!! ...I hope It will not be over 1000$ or I'll choose a 21+31+40 limited used without any exitation.

I think the more appropriate question is: does Sigma have any small lenses (besides the recent mirrorless ones)?

The rumors of "K-02 (APS-C) in retro body, but compact and with better ergonomics than K-01" started to float....I don't know if it's true, of course.
But it seems to me it will be body for new DA limited design.

What do you think about it?

What if......

This new 20-40mm lens is the first in the line, as a streetphotography/family picture lens?

Do we see:
- 40-80mm/f2.0-f2.8 portraitlens
