Other than WR, I am not getting it. 20 to 40 mm it is well covered. Why do you need this?

Because I like small lenses for my walking around. Because the DA 21 is fine but it is not WR. Because the DA 21 is fine except I do want to zoom to 40 sometimes. Because I don't want to get a DA 40 just to get the two focal lengths. Because the DA*16-50 is too expensive (or at least until we find out the price of the 20-40) and SDM is scary to me.

I think that this lens has the potential to be very useful and sell very well, assuming the image quality is up there and it's sharp wide open. I really like the Takumar-style zoom ring.

I only hope for two things: that it is neither WR nor has a focusing motor. Why? Because these two will drive up the price and make it larger and more likely to fail (thinking of the SDM debacle).

Won't adding DC make it heavier? As much as I want DC, screw seems more In line with the limited.

To those who find the zoom range somewhat limited: keep in mind that although the zoom ratio is only 2:1, at the indicated focal length range there is a 28 degree difference in the angle of view, as compared to a 10 degree difference for a 70-150 zoom, for example.

If you wanted a 20mm APS-C angle of view with your FA 31,
you'd either have to stitch on APS-C,
or use the FA 31 on 24x36mm.
I know. But my point is that as I already have the excellent 31mm Limited and the rather good 18-135mm WR zoom, this lens doesn't make sense to me unless it has exceptional image quality AND is weather resistant.

It is making sense in more than one way. Size. Looking sexy. Good zoom range for many things, and so narrow that it is amost a prime lens. Sexy looking.

Only negative thing for now could be the prize, for my wallet, then it would be just in my dreams...months with FA 31...

Seriously talking: ... It just looks so good! Can't be bad.

This lens is for users who just want 20-40mm APS-C coverage
at modest apertures in a single, compact package.

Since it might be based on the FA20-35 - is FF compatibility possible?

I'm not an expert, but seems to be completelly different from 20-35. Only by looks of it(don't mean what I wrote before) would make it a new formula? But I'm not an expert.

I could see my self in that group of users.

the inherent backlash in the screwdrive would make screw autofocus a hit-and-miss affair.
Are you able to document this claimed disadvantage of screwdrive?
E.g. in the DA 70 at f/2.4, or the 100/2.8 macros, or the FA 77 at f/1.8,
which would all be more critical than the new 20/2.8-40/4.

Me too.
I've dithered around the FA 20-35 for a while,
but held off in hopes of this lens from the roadmap.
