On one hand, this makes production costs very cheap (much cheaper than the 18-55 kit) (assuming that lens elements esp. asphericals are the primary cost drivers), but on the other hand, having too few lens elements in a zoom usually introduces optical quirks.
Laminated aspherical elements are cheap,
and may not hold up well long-term.
OTOH, the SLD glass could be quite expensive.

I don't think the HD coating makes much practical difference in the field.

Here's a comparison of the smc and HD 15/4 limiteds. (The smc DA in fact looks better because its starbursts aren't stunted by rounded blades like the HD version).

HD version

smc version

Original images and thread link (thanks mooeep).
Thanks!

We now have 50 51 pages of discussion on a lens that no one has seen, handled or used, and that's just in this thread, let alone the various other parallel universe threads on the same topic. I think this thread in particular has reached its use-by date.

I await Adam's "I have a production sample and my impressions are" write-up to appear, and then let the battle recommence...

And you just added to it....

And so did I.

Why do we need an actual review? Don't we know everything there is to know about it from this thread?

Hi friends, 5 shots with this lens (pre-prod model) + K-3, hold in Current Paris's "salon de la photo 2013" :

1-
20mm f/2.8

2-
31mm f/4

3-
31mm f/4.5

4-
40mm f/4

5-
40mm f/7.1

White balance is difficult in subtle lighting.
But for me, it's a true limited lens
It looks very sharp, and has a nice bokeh.

Plus, it looks very nice on K-3 silver :

Yup, looks nice. A hint of bokeh outlining in some of the lights but not bad at all overall.

I don't like the look of those highlights in the background - a very bright center point with some outlining at the edges.

Thanks, @Zygonyx. Quite promising.

Nice rendering of the subject's head in Number 4,
and the "Ricoh" lettering on the tag band
at the edge of the 20/2.8 shot looks clean,
at least at web resolution.

BTW, is the "31mm" FL on Numbers 2 and 3
a joke that P-Ricoh built in to the lens' chip?

That neck strap reminds me of a hat I used to wear, provided by a member of my baseball team, Red lettering on white. I hated that those hats. Here's to hoping Pentax's colours don't get changed to Ricoh's.

Well, I have to say for me, the bokeh in #2 is not pleasant… but I'm not sure that has anything to do with the lens and overall the bokeh is smooth enough.. to bad you didn't do the images with a couple of lenses. When I was looking at the DA 15, I had them get out a 16-50, my 10-17 and 18-125, just so I could compare different aspects. But these days I expect every lens to be sharp, it's how it renders bokeh that is of interest. My first impression is this is pretty smooth. It would be interesting to see how it stacks up against the 21, 31 and 40. It looks, good, but I need context. Many thanks for posting this. It's actually the first thing in the thread I'm interested in.

The lens does extend more at both ends like the kit lens! It does looks center-sharp from here, but I am dubious about its handling of highlights.

Btw, were you able to get the max aperture at intermediary FL? Was it lighter than it looks?

Thank you for the update.:-)
