If you can afford it, do it

Personally, I decided to get the new Sigma 35mm and keep the 21mm.

What the heck!? I though Japan was supposed to be the first getting everything!

Hopefully I can pick up a copy tomorrow as the sites still say the 6th is the release date. Oh well, enjoy your lens!

Yeah otherwise no one would want to touch that scorcher of a 21 3.2. Or it could be that they'd rather keep it in the limited family of size/weight/build instead of slightly-faster-but-still-slowish
To be honest the 21/3.2 is an f/4 lens masquerading as a 3.2.

Wide open the DA 21 is soft. But no lens sharpens faster to my eye because at f/4 it clicks in nicely on the biggest centre. And by 5.6 across the frame.

Funny lens. Very small and light, but I'd never recommend it for f/3.2 nor compare it on that metric. I would not be surprised if the 20-40 is better at 21mm f/2.8-3.5 than the DA 21mm, but the prime pulls away after that, at 1/2 the price and size.

Having just picked up a DA21 here on PF, I plan on agreeing wholeheartedly as soon as it arrives (today!). I do wish it would engage the f/2.8-precision AF sensor on the II (arriving Monday?), but I really like my old SMC-A 24 so this should be a fun & useful lens. Until funds magically appear for the 20-40, which I probably cannot bring myself to resist

I did not read all 64 pages of this thread - but I am a little surprised how excited people are about this lens. Considering Sigma just came out with a the 18-35mm F1.8 lens for APS-C cameras, this variable aperture F2.8-4 seems just shockingly underwhelming to me. I love that they built it in the style of the old LTD's - but the beauty of those lenses was not just the aesthetics of the lens mount but the beautiful picture quality at F1.8 and F1.9.

So what I'm curious - what is the big draw to this lens? The Sigma ranked as one of the best zoom lenses DXO ever tested and it is more than a full stop brighter than this new Pentax offering...

So basically, you want to start this thread all over because you don't feel like reading what's already here?

Some pretty good answers to that in the first 64 pages of the thread.

that's not what he is saying. you're stretching his words.
He is actually pinpointing the biggest issue with this lens. Most people considering to buy this lens will ask themselves the same question, and that is including me.

That is exactly what he's saying, no stretching required. If you don't "get" this lens, then don't buy it. Apparently, not many folks feel that there is much of an "issue" with this lens as the big retailers pre-sold all of their initial shipments.

I am certainly not asking that question.

The Tamron 17-50/2.8, which I have had for a couple of years now,
is too big and obtrusive for discreet use on the street.
It already attracts unwelcome attention from security wannabees,
and can intimidate some subjects.

The Sigma, which is 50% bigger and almost twice the weight,
is only going to be worse from that point of view.

This thread would be a long read, that's for sure. You might be able to get the gist by scanning through it and reading a few posts along the way!

The lens promises a special combination of desirable characteristics, apparently not found in others. Early reports from users - some of whom have received their copy recently - are expected and should confirm the optical qualities.
