Yes, the K-3 is replacing it and the IIs. It's been a long 3 years

But that puts us back to a 3 camera line. k-500, k-50, k-3 and pricing at very roughly $600, $700 and $1300. k-500 and k-50 with da 18-55 k-3 body only. Way too big a gap between $700 and $1300 IMHO. Something does not seem right.

I had wondered if an announcement would be made on the K-5, as it was starting to crowd the K50 - but other than great prices I'd heard nothing official. Are you the 'voice of Ricoh' on this Adam? I had been planning to hold out for that news but I got impatient - OK I confess, the $599 deal made me do it! Maybe one of those voices in my head was right this time...

OK I'll bite: just the right opening for the mirrorless full-frame retro cam, with Sony A900 sensors that were discontinued about six years ago.
Don't come over, I'll just tar & feather myself and save everyone the effort

Recently. there have been some very tempting offers on the K-5 II and IIs in the UK, on top of the £85 cash-back from Pentax. So, even though I have a K-3 I ordered a IIs. I just couldn't pass over the chance to have one, and I'm sure it will compliment the K-3 nicely.

Maybe Ricoh will launch a K-30 II, with some improvements present in K-3, and a smaller sensor. I hope

There are not enough features between them to do this. Ergonomics aren't going to change, that really only leaves AA filter and focus points as the major point of difference between (other than 24mp sensor). The K-30 is not that far removed in IQ stakes as it is.

I like the camera so much I just bought a second K-5II. It really is a perfect "photographer's camera". I have little interest in the K-3 because I don't need video.

Adam, if you had to guess, do you think Pentax/Ricoh will continue to use 16 MP sensors in upcoming DSLR models?

As I've stated elsewhere, I think there's plenty of opportunity for a "K-3 light" type of camera. Single card slot, no user-selectable AA filter, no headphone output jack, perhaps the same 16 MP sensor already in use on other models.

I thought they might keep the K-5ii/s around for another year or so to fill that gap between the 50 and the 3... It appears not.

There are more differences, not just two. Exposure sensor, AF system, AA system, 3 motors to move the shutter and the mirror, dumping mirror system, microphone and earphone jack, 2 card slots, high speed card compatibility, Flucard with remote control compatibility, and at last, the sensor. The sensor on K-5, 5 II, 5 IIs, is more than 3 years old. Maybe they have another new sensor, around 15-18Mp, with better low light performance. Or maybe they have in mind a more video oriented camera,

I would probably introduce a 20Mp sensor in future cheaper models so that there's still a gap between them and the K-3. Pentax can't just keep on re-using the same sensor over in over- it's already been put into a total of 8 camera models, which is more than enough IMO, as great as that sensor is.

The K-3 (and others) will drop in price, and then it will be more like $500 - $600 - $1000 - $1700. What's the $1700, you ask?

We'll just have to wait and see!
