The last FA 20-35/4 I saw for sale new in the US (through last summer) was around USD 550.
The DA 20-40/2.8-4 was on sale for USD 900 in November.
Given the virtually silent DC in-lens motor, WR, and wonderful IQ,
it is way more than "roughly the same product".

Ah, marketing!

Those are nice features, and I'll pay for such things when I actually need them, but the end results are "wonderful IQ" vs. "wonderful IQ" for 1/3 to 1/2 the cost.


I'm not bashing the new lens (it's too expensive to handle roughly anyway) - I'm just questioning whether it takes better photos.

I'm not certain why people don't follow the thought that having the same lens 7 years ago and now, isn't the same. Even a slow lens from 7 years ago is faster today, as the ISO performance gain on modern cameras clearly allows for it.
And I expect modern designs from Pentax will go in that direction, by providing you rather uncompromised and unique image quality, than fast aperture and unnecessary bulk. DA20-40 is such an example.

It's great that camera companies like Pentax are changing their design priorities to match the reality of current technology. It's the right thing to do.

But there are so many different use cases, and so many unique advantages and characteristics of faster lenses, that many of the reasons for using one have absolutely not changed at all, even if you're content to use only the latest bodies and sensors.

I am going to attend WPPI March 3-5. Curiosity, when I first checked the exhibitor list I noticed the company was listed under Ricoh. When I revisited the list again a few days ago, it is now listed as Pentax.

I spent lot of time at the Ricoh booth at CES. On the last day I was there, one of the Ricoh/Pentax guys told me to expect nice surprises for WPPI one of which was a long zoom.

I'm very interested in how Pentax changes its lens roadmap if two rumored lenses come out. If we get a rear converter as well, only one lens, the DA wide zoom, would be left to be announced in 2014 or later. Pentax could leave the lens roadmap untouched so that only the DA wide zoom is on the roadmap, which gets me wonder that Pentax is going to focus not on the K-mount but on the other mounts.

Speaking about the rumored K-60, has Pentax ever implemented RGB metering on their DSLR? I don't remember any.
If Nikon has it (RGB metering) patented, I wonder how RP is gonna use it on their machine....

The K-3 has an 86,000-pixel RGB exposure meter. Is that the same as the Nikon system?
