Maybe Sony wants to stop production on the "old" 16 megapixel sensor.

That rumor could come from Le Chasseru d'image who said that Pentax will have 3 new nodies
K600
K60 and a KL retro style
Le prochain reflex Pentax sera rétro.

In 2014 Pentax has a range of four K SLR cameras , all recent .
K3 , KL retro look, the K60 and K600 .

Ricoh advanced K3 would decline in the lower boxes , with a simplified version of the RGB meter adopted by the three cases , a simplified AF module 10 collimators for K60 , and stabilization and simulation AA K3 for KL .

KL , K60 K600 would be based on the same chassis , that of improved K50 and one new mail.

- The K600 , took the body of the K60 except the back panel idem K500 , only in black .
Inherit more compared to K500 :
- New electronics for more responsiveness.
- An enhanced through interaction with the meter while keeping the AF module K500 AF .
- A new meter derived from K3.
- A display of active AF points highlighted.
And always the same APSC sensor 16 mpx .
- Course with loss of all time finish.

- K60 have the same body as the K50 with cladding and a new redesigned front panel back also redesigned to match the aesthetics of KL and receive a small grip, always offered in technicolor .
Inherit more compared to K50 :
A - 20 mpx APSC sensor with AA.
- Wifi
- A new AF module derived from K3 with 17 AF points including 15 cross and at f2.8 .
And still finish all times.

The KL - plastic body would retro style different from K60 & 600 except for the back panel equal to that of K60 . The body is also different to allow the use of the battery K3 bulkier than the K50 and a small LCD display on the top , available in black and sylver ( limited edition ) .
Inherit more compared to K60 :
A - 20 mpx APSC sensor without AA .
- The stab and simulation AA K3
The AF - K3 .
The shutter - K5 .
- A larger buffer.
- Tester CDP dedicated to the former .
HDMI socket .
Finishing all times.
And with such a zoom: o: o: o

The French site wording sounded very confident, as if the poster somehow had 'seen' the 3 new bodies. The 20 mpix sensor from Sony is probably the only way forward I guess. Coming from manufacturing background I think the 'production run' for 16 mpix sensors may be long over in early or mid 2013. Now all Sony is gonna sell is 20 mpix and above APSC sensors. So any new mid range Sony,Nikon and Pentax bodies may not feature the 16 mpix sensor.
Traditionally though Pentax's business strategy seems to offer newer features(e.g focus peaking, better AF in K30 vs K5ii/s) in mid-range DSLRs before appearing in flagship models. I I hope the newer models do not use the older (K50/K30) AF servo motors and a crippled AF module of K3.

It is simple. K5II and derivatives like K50 and K500 were old tech, and although fine for some, they were plagued with same metering problems and flash performance, slower buffer etc.
Ricoh Imaging is now speeding up things and making its entry and mid level offer more consistent and lucrative. When it comes to such important updates, no strict timetables are to be followed; it should be done as soon as possible.

KL is for K-Lust.
But everything is going as predicted, it seems. KL retro fits right below K-3 and above mid level, as suggested many months ago.

It doesn't have to be expensive. Tamron's 150-600mm f5-6.3 is under $1100 and the results I'm seeing online (until my backordered copy arrives) are very acceptable.

K60 wouldn't surprise me a whole lot. Currently, all of Nikon's APS-C SLRs have 24 megapixel sensor and most recent one doesn't have an AA filter. entry level and mid level APS-C cameras have a life cycle of about a year -- mainly because more things stay the same than change. No one expects top of line auto focus/metering systems in them. I have no idea about the lens. Certainly if it came in between 1000 and 1500 dollars and had decent optical quality, it would be nice.

I'm still not convinced the DA Tele-Zoom isn't going to be a Tamron with HD coating and a premium price.

All I wanted was the k-3 performance with the k-5 sensor. Looks like their responding to me with the KL. I'll take that, gladly - if it's cheaper than the k-3~

Ah, thanks Bob. So it looks like the rumors have been around for a while?
Still, one-year lifecycle is a bit short to me. But companies have their own considerations.

By the way, a retro style Pentax would be nice to have

If the nomenclature is correct and it isn't groundbreaking in some form it is a waste of the 'L' designation. But then, so was the MX-1.
