I'm afraid you mean slower aperture, unfortunately. Now it's an f/4.5 lens.
with f2.8 at the wide end.

People argue that a variable aperture lens doesn't have to be inferior (in IQ), but in practice it usually is.
There is no optical/physical reason for this, quite the contrary. Take the various iterations of the Sigma 17-70, always offering f2.8 at the wide end. They are comparable, and always slightly better, than the Pentax 17-70.

Le prochain reflex Pentax sera rétro.

It's so funny the way the rumour is self-spreading over the Internet.

Why make the 18-70 when we have the 18-135 already? Why not make a 16-85 or 15-85 or something? That will really be a nice range ......

I'm still dreaming for a probable ~18-70 f2.8 since the 20-40 is rather er... Limited
:-P

135-400 WR DC in the ~650 range would be nice. Then I'd have to get a second body for hiking. If they did the 12-28 in WR....

No, that price was fixed for quite a while
(I'd been tracking it, before deciding to wait for the DA Ltd zoom).

It was a much lower price than the USD 850
being asked on the Pentax-Ricoh Japanese webstore
right up until later in 2013.

More realistically, for the Japanese market, the last review (9/25/13) of the lens here

SMC Pentax-FA 20-35mm F4 AL Reviews - FA Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

states: "So if you want, you can get it new for about [USD] 500 as of this moment, but of course no USA warranty will come with it."

I noted when DA20~40 was first announced there were two FA20~35 copies available in St. Louis NIB for $665 at a B&M Dealer. They were NOS at the original Dealer-Listed price, and they disappeared within a week.

I'm with you on this. I'd definitely appreciate a 15-85 zoom lens. A 18-70 would seem to overlap the 18-135 a fair bit, unless the IQ was much better and the aperture range a lot faster.

I still don't believe 18-70. It's to much like 17-70. Like the sigma 17-70 first model which is also 2.8-4.5. The roadmap implies a longer lens than 70 anyway. A 18-70 will more likely be a new kitlens (3.5-5.6). Which might not be put on the roadmap.

17-70/4 will be discontinued.

A 15-60 would probably be doable (4x zoom).
In the end, they decided on 2.8-4.5 and they reduced the wide end a little bit. It better be good... but if it becomes the new kit lens, then I guess that's a good thing. Pentax has to compete with Fuji and it's 18-55 2.8-4 now, on the XT1 (which I would drool for, if I didn't have Pentax glass that I love already).

I'm just hoping that Ricoh/Pentax provides me with a good reason to own both this new zoom and my existing DA 18-135. A 15-60 with f/2.8-4.5 would be really great and give me not too much overlap with other zoom lenses I have. Basically, they should build on the success/popularity of the DA 16-45, by increasing the range and widening the aperture, and of course, ensuring high image quality... Wouldn't even necessarily have to be WR, but a DC motor is almost a necessity at this point.

The 18-70 was originally marked as a * lens on the roadmap. Hoping for a higher end AW lens!

only thing in this thread that seems remotely interesting to me are the Tele Converter and the KL. These variable aperture zooms they seem to be releasing should be a constant f4 if they want a "budget" zoom lens. would be much more useful than a 2.8-4.5 or whatever.

Variable aperture is not the same as budget. The Sigma 17-70 F2.8-4 performs as well as the DA* 16-50 2.8 optically. The new DA 20-40 is not budget but is F2.8-F4.
