I hope not that its that patent/design, this lens is 30 cm long!!! 10 cm longer than other 70-200/2.8... This makes no sense on a compact Pentax DSLR.

One of the examples in this patent is a 15-45mm f/2.8 for 1/1.7" sensors and the optical formula is exactly that of Q's 06 Telephoto Zoom.

Indeed - but a 24-70ish zoom is still lacking, isn't it?
It is but opposed to the 24-70 a 70-200/2.8 will be even more useful on APS than FF so makes sense to release one "early".

Everything Pentax "must" be a rebadge Tamron, these days. Because Pentax, unlike Tamron, were never known for their quality optics

Come on, Pentax only needs Tamron for the cheap low-end stuff they can't be bothered to design themselves. I can imagine Pentax (Ricoh Imaging now) engineers saying: "another cheap, slow superzoom? Eww... can't we just rebadge a Tamron? I'd rather work at a Limited/* lens..."

Food for thought.
  1. It's a bit odd that the first DFA* on the roadmap be a tele-zoom and not a standard zoom
  2. Tokina AT-X 70-200 f/4 Pro FX VCM-S has no little brother yet in the 24-70mm range
Hmmm?

There is a Pentax patent from 2012, for a 70-200/2.8 lens.
Indeed, it covers the 135 format image circle (43+ mm diagonal).

It is not anything like Tamron.

Tamron: 70-200/f2.8 — 23 elements in 17 groups
Pentax (see diagram below): 70-200/f2.8 — 17 elements in 14 groups

Odd or not, that's how it is (except it's not marked as DFA* on the roadmap). And no, it won't be a Tokina.

Definitely saying a FF is coming without actually announcing it. The probably downgraded the new DA* 16-85 to a DA something because there is a FF coming and there will be a FA* 24-70 F2.8

Again, there are several illustrations within this patent. One is indeed for a 24x36 70-200mm f/2.8, another one is for a 1/1,7" 15-45mm f/2.8.

The Q's 06 Telephoto Zoom happens:

- to cover the 1/1,7" image circle
- to be a 15-45mm f/2.8
- to have the same optical formula as the lens described in the patent (same number of elements and groups and same diagram)
- to have been announced on September 10, 2012 when the above patent was requested on March 10, 2011 and granted on October 4, 2012.

Guess which lens this patent is for?

A possible candidate, which could be rebadged to match the 70-200/2.8 would rather be the 24-70/2.8 from Tamron: 24-70mm F/2,8 (Modell A007)

Why are people so obsessed with rebadging?
