True.

Yet, a DFA*24-70/2,8 DC-WR is the new lens I would buy instantly for my K-5. Even if it would just be a DA* for APS-C only.

Definitely saying a FF is coming without actually announcing it. The probably downgraded the new DA* 16-85 to a DA something because there is a FF coming and there will be a FA* 24-70 F2.8
I'd say: definitely working on a FF and wanting us to know. Yet to decide to bring it to market or not, and so the lenses for it are not yet labeled.

Because they hope to buy a 24-70 and a 70-200 at Tamron prices instead of Nikon or Canon-like prices.

Tamron lenses aren't AW, and this is labeled as a * lens.

Were not! It's just it always happen. That why we are hoping it is a new one a real Pentax Design!

it would be much cheaper for them to simply rebrand/repurpose Tamron or Sigma technology, both of which already make great 70-200mm FF lenses -- this way, the real manufacturer gets to widen their base without having to incur the costs to market to Pentax users, and Pentax wins by not having to develop any new technology. Been done in the past. Might be the case here.

There is a Pentax patent from 2012, for a 70-200/2.8 lens.
Indeed, it covers the 135 format image circle (43+ mm diagonal).

It is not anything like Tamron.

Tamron: 70-200/f2.8 — 23 elements in 17 groups
Pentax (see diagram below): 70-200/f2.8 — 17 elements in 14 groups
The FA* 80-200 is 16 elements is 13 groups, so it is probably derived from that. There are also 16-70mm F4 Patents and 18-70mm F4-5.6 patents btw, but the latter is for mirrorless.

Maybe because Pentax/Ricoh have only managed to design one truly new zoom lens in the last few years (HD 20 - 40)?

They can also trade, license, and repackage their patents.

So just because Company A has Patents X, Y, & Z doesn't mean that eventually Company B won't the one who actually implements one or more of them!

If the fact that Sigma has been historically shy about fully embracing Pentax K, it might be because Ricoh and Sigma are or have been negotiating some sort of future partnership (or alternatively, they see each other as competitors -- who knows?)

Comparison

As Jun Hirakawa designed the 24-70/2.8 it rather is a Pentax lens in Tamron housing .

I just wish they'd actually released a new lens from the roadmap before updating it! So far, under Ricoh we've had the HD limited update (which significantly downgrades the DA15, AFAICT), the 20-40mm (which hasn't been reviewed well), and the 1.4 TC. Oh and the 55-300 WR update, which is actually useful, I guess, but that's a little underwhelming compared to the release of such a nice, well-received and well-reviewed body as the K-3. I'd really like to see some new, kick-ass glass...

Food for thought. It's a bit odd that the first DFA* on the roadmap be a tele-zoom and not a standard zoom Tokina AT-X 70-200 f/4 Pro FX VCM-S has no little brother yet in the 24-70mm range Hmmm?
Last year at CP+ a Tokina rep said they were working with Pentax on FF lenses....

Hey everyone, just a thought do you think the lens will be 70-200 mm or a remake FF 70-210 mm?

I thought Sigma was notoriously disliked by camera OEMs because they reverse engineer compatibility instead of licensing things like mounts and flash protocols.

If it's being listed as a * lens it will be constant aperture. Most high end 70-200s are f/2.8 so you figure it out.
If Ricoh really wants to surprise us, they'll make it an f/2.0 - f/2.8.
