The mirror- and shutter-mechanics will probably be a limitation but maybe we can expect more than 1fps and a larger buffer.
It wiull be interesting to see whether we get the K3 technology or something better - which would suggest something else coming.

The K-3's AF-pattern would seem rather small in that huge viewfinder (like the K-5's in the current 645D), maybe they made a bigger one.

Are they really going to call it 645D 2014?

  • Compatible with 35mm- and medium-format films
  • Market launch: to be determined

How is this compared to a film scanner?
MF scanners are very expensive.

It's not like they're going to sell the macro lens for the Q as "TELEPHOTO MACRO"...

According to the Press Release that is the product name -- PENTAX 645D 2014. It doesn't say designated or tentatively named like the other new stuff.

My guess, though, is that's just translation error.

At the last CP+ they had a couple of 'reference' lenses for the K-01. Those never made it past the mockup stage I suspect?
Wonder how many of these concept vehicles we will ever see, or when?

Maybe they're pulling an Apple -- remember, all models of the full-size iPad (prior to the iPad Air, at least) are just branded as "iPad." When the iPad 3 and 4 came out, they were each referred to, officially, as "the new iPad." The model numbers are secondary and downplayed. They do the same thing with the iMac, Mac Mini, MacBook Air, etc. There are several generations, all with the same promoted name, distinguished by year of introduction. I own a 2012 MacBook Air, for example -- nowhere on it does it say "2012."

Maybe Pentax is setting themselves up to call each revision of this camera the 645D, with the year added secondarily as a qualifier for purposes of distinguishing among the models.

I'm curious wheteher Pentax will use a completely new body design, like a beefed up K-3, on the 645D 2014 or if they use the old, rather large body design. There is potential for significant miniaturization of the 645 body....

They could be locking the mirror up during high burst-rate, and relying on the LCD screen or adopting the Flu-card wi-fi technology for remote viewing. That leaves the mechanical FP shutter as the limitation, so leaf shutter lenses could take it to an even higher rate.

I'm pretty sure I've never said this about a Pentax product announcement, but...

Every single one of those products sounds very exciting to me. Every single one. The medium format items don't affect me, but they are exciting. I'd love to own a film duplicator (seriously), and a Q telephoto macro sounds like a dream come true. This is easily the most exciting Pentax announcement ever, for me, if it is true.
