This lens really gives the FA31 a run for its money. While the FA is certain to be sharper, it's nearly 2.5X the price of this one. Pentax may have to lower their price on the redesigned FA31, if and when they release it, to compete.
But de FA31 will also work on the new FF dslr presented in September in Cologne.

looking forward to this lens. Will have to decide between the 18-35mm and 30mm. I guess it will depend on the price difference. Althought the 30mm is around half the wait of the 18-35... decisions decisions.

I'm so happy that the new Sigma 30 1.4 is coming for Pentax.

In the quest for a solid "normal" prime, I've tried:

The old Sigma 30mm. Sharp center. Garbage edges and corners. Any improvement on this is welcome. I'm also more familiar now with focus adjustment, which is something that gave me a sour experience with the old Sigma 30 (purchased when I was new to the whole "photography thing").

The DA 35mm 2.4 (multiple copies actually). It's too narrow on crop.

The FA 31mm is too pricey. I've never tried one.

The F 28mm 2.8 was good, but not fast enough.

The FA* 24mm doesn't get good reviews. It's also kind of rare and pricey for what it brings to the table.

I've wanted a normal prime for a while, and I almost bit the bullet on an FA 35 f2 a few times, but I always suspected I would end up feeling more or less the same about it as I did the DA 35 2.4.

Bring it on Sigma!

Also my thoughts!

Hey Pentax, why new slow 20-40 zoom? 24..30mm fast(ish) prime with WR, thanks!

does this give Pentax shooters hope for an eventual release of the Sigma 24-105 f/4 in K-mount??
I wouldn't have thought so, as it's a full-frame lens.

I've heard from several sources that Dutch retailers are being told a full frame pentax will be released this year.

The Sigma "Art" 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM is (i) a 24x36 lens and (ii) available in Pentax mount -since much longer than the 30mm f/1,4 DCHSM, by the way (they were announced on the same day). So there is no definitive rule here.

It's a bit too early for that; at this stage, I bet they were only being hinted about it

Indeed but the probability would be a lot higher with a Pentax FF. Not that it makes no sense on an APS body but it makes a lot more sense on an FF IMO.

BTW, is there a big difference in price between the 30/1.4 (new) and the 35/1.4 ?
Disregarding optical capabilities and sticking to focal/use /etc, the 35 is a tad longer but us FF so...

I'd say I'd take the 35 but...

We won't know for sure yet until the lens is officially available for sale, but in the USA, the 35/1.4 costs $900 USD, whereas it's speculated that the new 30/1.4 would cost around $500 or so.

I think you can safely extrapolate the difference in price of the Canon and Nikon versions.

if it's the FA 31 vs the Sigma 35 DG ... personally I don't mind the latter is f1.4 - I don't often use that big aperture unless really needed. The aperture ring (since I also use a K2) is the dealbreaker for me. Now if Pentax is going to refresh the entire FA Limited line with HD and prolly a bit more other stuff... big-time pocket trouble.

This new 30 1.4 Art lens is very interesting though...

Mmm quite a difference indeed. A pity but as expected.

Now my issue is: I want both the Sigma 18-35 zoom and this Sigma 30 prime lens. Should I save up my pennies (need LOTS) to get both? Or will the prime be redundant? f/1.4 is nice as well as the smaller size of the prime... but if I had to prioritize the order of buying the two lenses, I'd probably go for the zoom first, assuming both are in stock soon....
by the time they become available.... you would have enough time to save for both.
they will have to actually produce some 18-35mm...yet to see them.
