Power letters change over time but basically are just recognizable letters with strong sounds or cool shapes. And no one else using a Z mount. And I can't think of other companies with a "Z" featured prominently in their models' names. So it's probably just a brand recognition issue and nothing more.

But I agree, the Z is just a power letter, there is no prophecy here, just a "cool" sound to differentiate the new product from the previous generation. They could have done a Mk.2, but Canon already does that. They can't change the number, because it represents the mount, not just the model. So the best choice is to just add an identifier. What would you guys call the new 645D? 645D Ultrophotar? 645D Medilux?

I don't know why the letter "Z" was chosen. However... I think there just might be a simple reason behind it. Maybe Ricoh's marketing guys decided they want each lens system to be known by a letter. Maybe the whole 645 system is going to be rebranded as the Z system, and the 645z camera is meant to be a transition to that. Then the Pentax lens formats will be Q, K and Z.

My reasoning is that, if there are going to be more medium-format cameras in the future, it would be easier to work a Z into their names than to fit "645" into the name of each one.
Sounds most logical - I'll buy into this reason.

Of course, it may be far too logical to turn out to be true!

I don't care what it's called, I want one.

Can the screen be flipped around and set flat with the back to the outside?

I am amazed that your camera can talk! However, it appears to require more instruction as Z is not a word.

Besides that, Z isn't the final word or letter... p is.

My sources tells me that Z stands for the new FF mount. The new camera is a look alike of 645d, smaller by about 23.9% in volume, so that it will be appropriate body size for FF sensor. Pentax is finally coming out with FF, but they are sneaking up on you guys in the shadow of new 645d. Speaking of pulling a fast one. At any rate, IT is finally here. Finally.

Yup, about 23.9%. Very roughly that. Could be 23.8 i suppose.
