Well, they've just developed a 285 gram K-mount lens for crop sensors
that is indeed 35mm or 40mm (or 30mm or 60mm) equivalent.

'Z' has been in my observation commonly used branding to mark a significant change of direction or technology. I immediately thought of the 1971 USA-branded Datsun 240z (Nissan Fairlady Z in Japan), which had formerly been a somewhat boxy, pedestrian design 2-seat convertible. Introducing the sports-hatchback design concept to the west forever altered our thinking about the product placement of a Japanese car - no more econoboxes for us!!. If the 645 brand is indeed the '645z' perhaps that means Ricoh is staking its marketing claim with its flagship camera.

"There is room for a third full-line camera brand and it can be Pentax, but it must be an alternative to Canon and Nikon, not another Canon and Nikon."

The coming year should be very exciting.

Why you all so pessimistic about this?? Have you see the prices of Mamiyas/Hasselblads/PhaseOne/etc?? they are at least twice the price of the 645Z ($10k aprox). This product have the chance to make a revolution in medium format gear. I hope they get one in the studio I work!!

What if 'Z' is for Zeta?

If Zeta is the 645 camera and Theta is the 360° camera, then Eta (E) is the designation for the . . . . .

Oh wait. Nevermind. That goes in another Forum.

lol yes, it seems like the writer of that article frequents these forums. The article is satire, but it did capture the doom and gloom we are often faced with

RI it seems loves mid-April announcements. The GR came out last year at (almost) exactly the same time.
The Japanese fiscal year starts on April 1st.

That Z cost a lot of money. You know they hired marketing studies, graphic designers, had many high and low level meetings about this branding. This is not an insignificant investment!

Z - if it's not the last word in photography, at least it's the last letter!

What if Z stands for simply ZED. If that was the case would Americans be able to purchase it? Assuming it comes in only one coloUr.
