LX = sixty, not fifty. 1979 (ish) was (near) the sixtieth anniversary of Asahi Optical Co. = LX was named 'in honor of' sixty years.

A K-L wouldn't work.

An LX-D would have worked in 2012 (sixtieth anniversary of the AsahiFlex). (it could actually work this year - close enough). The IIB sixtieth would be 2014 - the first SLR with an instant return mirror.

To be an 'L' camera it would need to be groundbreaking, special, unique in some way - a Milestone camera.

Something between the K3 and the 645z or something entirely new and unexpected from Pentax?

Or 2017 is the sixtieth anniversary of the fixed pentaprism camera - the AP

It does exist and was designed around exactly the same idea (Spotmatic and 50 years anniversary) and based on the K10D but it was never marketed.
wow. that's a really nice Takumar-DA 40mm, with a green ring.

Pentax has an excellent idea to celebrate 50 years of Spotmatic. In Roman numerals that it is: L.
Remember that letter. Stay tuned.

But not an L-mount!

Could be K-L (L for "large" meaning 24x36 format).

I guess a 645z would then be 'Larger' and if they ever do a 67 it would be 'Largest.'

From what we know, the 35mm digital camera will not have a K-something designation.
But at this stage no one really knows what will that be. Maybe L-something?

On the other hand, L may be a designation for a different form factor camera, regardless of sensor size. It may mount all DA lenses, for example.

If Ricoh Imaging is really focused on K-mount, I think that attention warrants different forms of cameras ready for the K-mount. Otherwise, all investment in lenses, underlying tech, etc. makes little sense if we have just 2 cameras, and basically 1 same camera with slight form variation — in looks and overall appeal. If the large sensor mirrorless is out of the question in order to preserve the appeal and integrity of the K-mount, then please do you best of imagination within the K-mount.

About 15 months ago when James Malcolm interviewed users I was one of them. I asked if they would ever make a 6X7 DSLR. The answer was a flat-out no and that the 6X7 mount is dead. The reason being only that a 6X7 sensor would be so incredibly expensive as to preclude anyone from buying it.

At the other end of the spectrum, about 12 months ago I was one of the Q Users James Malcolm interviewed. He directly, with no prompting, voluntarily stated, "Pentax is ccommitted to Q, K-mount and 645." There was no mention whatsoever of 6x7.

Sarcasm doesn't come across well in a Post.

Unless we know, we don't know; and if we know, we can't say we know; so we should know we know nothing.
