Will Pentax make DA version of Tokina 11-16? It's the best fast ultra-wide zoom lens.

Tokina AF 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro DX (Canon) - Review / Lens Test Report

It's outstanding lens. highly impressive and the best in ultra-wide zoom or fixed lenses's class.
IMO.

It could be the perfect line of DA* zooms - DA*11-16/2.8, DA*16-50 SDM and DA*50-135.

I didnt know that the Photozone review was discussed before. Actually I didnt know that it existed already. Thanks for the information Ogl, I had already read Ken Rockwell's review, but I always take his reviews with a full bag of salt. I also agree with you, that looks like a heck of a lens for cropped cameras. I will start to raise some money just in case.

Tokina 11-16mm

He already changed first version of test where Tokina was better than Nikkor at D300.

Ken Rockwell said that Tokina is better than Nikkor 14-24 at 14, 15, 16 mm at all apertures.

BUT NOW I can see another words.

I compared this Tokina 11-16mm shot on a D300 to the 14-24mm shot on a D3 in FX mode, and the sharpness is the same except for the far corners wide-open!

Let it be. Anyway, Tokina is outstanding lens.

I sure hope pentax doesn't make a version of this lens. I hope tokina releases in in pentax mount under their own name. Apparently printing pentax on the case increases the cost a couple hundred bucks.

That didnt happen always. THe tamron 18-250 rebadged was equal in price and I might be wrong but I think that the 10-17 fisheye is actually cheaper on Pentax mount (though I would have to double-check this). IF they add weather sealing to the 11-16 then you can expect that 100-200 increase in price.

Ken Rockwell's uses the fascist "review" procedure, specifically: repeat your opinion no less than eleven times in succession while shouting down all opposition. But since his logic is bad he often contradicts himself in the space of a paragraph, from one definitive statement to the next.

I am sure he has done a world of harm to readers who trust his experience through sheer force of will, and who are not sure enough of themselves to spot the logical fallacies.

Some defend him as a gadfly but to my mind one needs to be intelligent, well-reasoned and clever to succeed at such a role. Rockwell is none of these.

I wouldn't mind paying extra for the weather-sealing.... besides, what other manufacturer can claim to having a sealed ultra-wide (excepting the D3 and 14-24)?

It's rumoured to be on an internal road map, I suspect we will see it announced on the next issue.

When? I have no idea, but I would guess prior Photokina (Aug/Sep).

I'm hoping for this one. The DA15 will fulfil my wide needs in my prime kit, but for the rough travel zoom kit, I would really like this one in a DA* version. I like the thought of DA*11-16/2.8 + DA*16-50/2.8 + DA*50-135/2.8. If only there could be a DA*135-sth too, doesn't even have to be f/2.8, f/4 is OK...

Would the 11-16/2.8 be a DA* or a DA lens? This may have impact on its timing.

It seems that all DA* zooms are made in a dedicated DA* zoom factory and as such DA* zooms are on a separate timeline than the DA* prime lenses and the DA glass.

*IF* the 11-16/2.8 will be a DA*, that would mean the DA*60-250/4 needs to be up and going first. Looking at the time it is taking the DA*60-250/4 to arrive on the market after the two first DA* zooms (one year given the current planning), it seems that getting a DA*11-16/2.8 ready for sales could take a lot of time, possibly summer 2009? Of course the first two DA* zooms (esp the DA*16-50/2.8) had a few issues in the early production stage that are out of the way now and shouldn't happen again with the DA*60-250/4, so hopefully things will start moving faster for the DA* zooms?

If, on the contrary it would "just" be a DA11-16/2.8, it would follow the DA17-70. Time between DA zooms looks shorter, so a market date in the last quarter of 2008 would seem possible?

Any hints, thoughts, guesses about this?

When i first read the title to this thread, I just thought - why bother? But the more I think of it -

You have the DA14 - wide f2.8, but prime and NOT SDM. You have the DA12-24 - wide zoom, but f4 and and not SDM. You have the upcoming DA15 limited - likely an f3.5 to keep the size in check as with other limited primes, but it will also not be SDM. This leaves no ultra-wide angle choice on the modern Pentax roadmap that is weather sealed or SDM (16-50 not withstanding).

What better way to cover a lot of bases than to introduce a FF compatible, weather-sealed, SDM, wide angle zoom with noted IQ than the 11-16? But alas, this appears to be another crop sensor release. It is possible that with Hoya at the leads and Samsung hinting at a FF body soon, that Pentax may have had to pass on this one? Who knows...

Anyway, DA*11-16/2.8 with weather-resist bodies could be very useful lens for any landscapes and architectural objects all around the world with really good resolution at f/2.8 at center and corner.
It could be used in low-light with SR in the deserts, rainy weather, sea or in winter e.t.c.
