The fewer the better. More sales for those that do.
While there may be relatively few times that you want to shoot wide open, it is nice to have when you must. Also, don't forget the effect on bokeh (on all apertures) of having a faster lens.
Between word that Pentax and Tokina combined on this lens design, I'm expecting that Tokina got to announce first but Pentax gets some other advantage (maybe getting Tokina to manufacture enough to make it more easily available in the U.S. than the Nikon/Canon mount versions?). I find it very suspicious that Tokina does not offer this in anything other than Nikon/Canon mounts, particularly if Pentax helped design.
I don't think there is ANY DOUBT this will be one of Pentax's announcements at Photokina. Will be interesting to see what shape it takes. I imagine it will have to be priced higher than the 12-24mm (since it is faster/wider). I'm estimating a street price of $700-750. Hoping I can have one in my camera bag by next Spring.
