Will Pentax make DA version of Tokina 11-16? It's the best fast ultra-wide zoom lens.

Wim, in my opinion, any /2.8 constant zoom pretty much means DA*.

Let's hope so. It would seem logical for Pentax to follow through on that, esp since it would fit so nicely with the other two f/2.8 DA* zooms. But Pentax are known to surprise us from time to time...

It seems that all DA* zooms are made in a dedicated DA* zoom factory and as such DA* zooms are on a separate timeline than the DA* prime lenses and the DA glass.

DA* or DA, doesn't matter, but the damn thing better be weather sealed otherwise i may have to pass.

Just to add an alternative thought, how many people take landscape shots at F2.8 or greater...
Whilst such a large aperture would certainly have it's creative uses, I doubt people would need such a large aperture on a wide lens as often as first thought.

When I was looking into buying my Sigma 10-20mm I was torn as to buying the Pentax 12-24mm for it's larger aperture instead, but realised I wouldn't need it very often, and the other abilities of the Sigma (IQ, less CA's, Wider angle, cheaper price), where much more important.

Richard, do you really think a constant 2.8 lens would come out as a DA and not a DA*? ...And I am assuming it would be a constant 2.8 if it's the same as the other Tokina stable mates such as the 16-50 and 50-135.

It's not what I think, it's the information my "crystal ball"

(made in Oct '07) gives me! The DA* lenses are marked as such, this wasn't, just DA, remember the DA14 is f2.8. Of course the crystal ball could easily be in error and needs to be changed.

The fewer the better. More sales for those that do.

While there may be relatively few times that you want to shoot wide open, it is nice to have when you must. Also, don't forget the effect on bokeh (on all apertures) of having a faster lens.

Between word that Pentax and Tokina combined on this lens design, I'm expecting that Tokina got to announce first but Pentax gets some other advantage (maybe getting Tokina to manufacture enough to make it more easily available in the U.S. than the Nikon/Canon mount versions?). I find it very suspicious that Tokina does not offer this in anything other than Nikon/Canon mounts, particularly if Pentax helped design.

I don't think there is ANY DOUBT this will be one of Pentax's announcements at Photokina. Will be interesting to see what shape it takes. I imagine it will have to be priced higher than the 12-24mm (since it is faster/wider). I'm estimating a street price of $700-750. Hoping I can have one in my camera bag by next Spring.

If they offered the DA*11-16mm for $700 there is no doubt in my mind that I will purchase it. I would also like to see a DA* 135-300/400mm as well with f/2.8-4/5.6 respectively. No that would make me happy.
