Thanks Kenn. I'm glad that Pentax is hiring on at the Philippines plant where SLR bodies are made....P+S are fine...but I'm a DSLR fan.

Inconsistancies....

Seems if Pentax Canada has inventory on the shelves not moving ...they would not be increasing prices to the extent they have for many of the current generation lenses. ie: 35 ltd macro, 12-24 DA* 16-50 and 50-135.

I'm going to comment purely out of ignorance so take it for what its worth.

Henry's is not interested in Pentax except to make money. You can see this thru their 4-page flyers. All Canons and Nikons and almost Sweet_F_All for Pentax.
That's because manufacturers pay Henry's for those advertising slots. Pentax is notorious for being extremely cheap on the advertising side (and it shows).

A complete shutdown is very unlikely.

Warranty laws and certain licensing approvals, as well as mandatory French localization means that a brand such as Pentax would have to withdraw the entire brand from Canadian distribution.

I do think Pentax Canada is run by reactionary fools who know nothing about marketing and distribution. This has been confirmed by at least 3 retailers I know, on both coasts and in the middle! They are "ineffective". The company and brand has no presence in the marketplace. That's a local's #1 job, and they do not do it.

Somehow, Pentax Canada makes things harder than they should be. Likely Hoya is outsourcing many aspects of their service and cleaning house, which can be a good thing. Long overdue IMNSHO.

Sorry for the disorganized writing, I just want to pour this out ASAP...

I heard news from someone who worked for Pentax Canada. I say worked because he quit recently to work for one of the "Big 2." Why quit? Because of Hoya. He is now unsure of the future of Pentax because of what's happening.(Though he says pound for pound the K20D is one of the best cameras out there, he shifted to one of the big 2 because he's unsure of Pentax's future in cameras and lenses). The Hoya people went to the Canada office and started laying off people left and right. (Just last week, 25 people were laid off). Half of their warehouse stock were sold off for a song he says. They still have stocks left but he says it will all soon be gone. He said the lenses were sold BY THE POUND, to Henry's and some other store, I forgot the name, owned by one Ron Silverstein. Anyway, he says the lease for the warehouse won't be renewed, and it seems that the end of Pentax Canada is near. He also said that Pentax is at a loss worldwide, and that Hoya even called Pentax Canada employees as "ineffective." Hoya, according to him, is not at all interested with Pentax Imaging, but only bought Pentax for their medical instruments. He says that the Hoya people seem to be all business (read: cold) and will do anything to cut their losses, even if it means closing out Pentax Imaging altogether.

My take on this? I'm hoping that the plan is to keep Pentax USA to handle the whole of North America, to cut costs. The source seemed pessimistic, but I don't think Hoya can afford to close down Pentax Imaging.

The only good thing coming out of this is, he'll be selling me his FA*80-200/2.8 (he has 2!) for $800 As well as his complete limiteds and pancakes "for a song."

Any Pentaxians from Canada feel this coming?

I have come to realize that Pentax Canada is a shed with a bench.

I haven't read the whole discussion and call this a little optimistic but maybe Hoya has a big distribution center in Canada and having 2 distribution centers might be a waste of money...

just a thought

I got the impression that Hoya was pretty much a Japan national corporation with little international business, only a few OEM customers for their glass and distributors for their optical filters. Which changed with the aquisition of Pentax. But I may be wrong.

When I saw this thread pop up, I thought it was a new rumour--check the first post and you'll see it was from May 2008!

So, guess it was wrong!

Nothing to see here...
