Why would anyone buy this lens? Why would anyone build a lens with a minimum focus distance of 5.6 meters? There are enough copies of the FA* 250-600/5.6 and FA* 600/4 to meet the demand for lenses of this focal length. The Sigma 500/4.5 is available new for much less money.

One member does, he hinted that he got it at a severe discount.

It's now 4269 euro (starting at 5.999 euro) wich makes it cheaper then the Sigma 500mm at 4649 euro.

I think he used words like "an offer no one would refuse", which made me think it was even less eexpensive.

Getting back to Photokina, I have the feeling that the tight opsec Ricoh is maintaining about it's plans for Photokina may be a positive sign. Putting the best possible spin on it, they may actually have a big news cargo enroute to Photokina that they want to protect.

I'm still trying to console myself with the 800 ISO images on my K-3 not being as good as the 6400 ISO on the 645z. I don't mind a stop and a third like on a D800, but 3 stops... that's just not fair. Only $9,000 (with tax and no lens) to buy into the club.... once I get over that, I might start speculating about an FF again.

That's in Europe. The US price is still $6995.95 (5100 euro). The US price for the Sigma 500mm is $4999 (3675 euro).

Wouldn't it be great if they cut out a 20 megapixel APS-H sensor from that wafer they make that 645Z sensor from? Put it inside a K-3 like body, but with a larger viewfinder.

I think the last APS-H body was the Canon ID IV from 2009. Things have moved on.

Wishes - completely uninformed! - for Photokina, in decreasing order of probability:
  • K-60 with 20 or 24mp and some AF improvements, maybe 14-bit raw;
  • Q macro lens;
  • 16-85ish (finally);
  • K-3z with tilting LCD and hybrid electronic/optical viewfinder;
  • K-1 full frame mirrorless with IBIS.

That's why I would want a new modern sensor. The 645Z sensor seems off excellent quality and maybe that is beacause it is more expensive to produce and that isn't an issue since it is for a premium camera.

ISO 800 -> 1600 -> 3200 -> 6400. 3 stops difference.
