Well selecting at at least 30x zoom there are camera's for 159 euro and Sony's H400 only costing 279 euro. So this is the competition for offering the cheapest camera.
The H400 is really a low specked version of the HX400 CCD chip no 1080p no lots of other goodies.

I always wonder how much Pentax has to do with the design of these camera. Feels like they are a pretty standard camera with some cosmetic external changes and re-badging depending on the company. A pretty low risk proposition from Pentax stand point, anyway.

Well since you come up with the list. The X-5 is #36 of the overal list, camera's superzooms that came out in the last two years. So that is the runner-up for mediocre camera's:

And now behold the Ricoh HZ15 camera:
http://www.kodakcamera.jkiltd.com/Americas/cameras/friendlyZoom/fz151.php

Again, same thing. Today's cheap compact cameras are all OEMs. Ricoh Imaging did not spend a day designing optics or internals for these.
The MX-1 is an OEM camera too; only the packaging is made by Ricoh Imaging on a more elaborate level worth considering.

So I think such new "Pentax releases" should be totally ignored -- this is nonsense, not a product made by Pentax / Ricoh Imaging at all.

It is not Olympus. It is OEM, made by Sanyo.
It is all nonsense. If I can appreciate anything that would be styling; I like Pentax brass top plate much better, and that's all.

I am still waiting for some real news about a real product designed and made by that team, because they have not been working on this product above at all. But in the meantime we are served with a warmed up meal from a tin can in (what was supposed to be) a first class restaurant.

But this shouldn't stop us complaining that precious resources were diverted from the "full frame" project

It is disappointing to see such a small sensor used on this big bridge camera.. Why not use at least a half inch sized sensor on these?? It seems the trend on enthusiast pocketable compacts is increasing sensor size.
