Pentax XG-1 (X-5 successor)

The following link shows the specs and a picture of the Pentax XG-1, a successor to the X-5. Don't get too excited - it still has a 1/2.3 sensor and looks like a distinctly budget model.

????????????PENTAX XG-1??????????????? - ????info

A dying breed I think.

This needs a larger sensor, the one off MX-1/Q7 or a 1" sensor. Needs to do RAW. So much zoom isn't needed, I guess that 25-300mm would be good. PRIME M processor, so a real killer in processing compared to cheaper camera's. The D-Li109 battery that is also in the K-50.

I think so too. Though the appeal of a large bridge camera these days IS you get a massive focal range. Otherwise, a compact like even the MX-1 seems more appealing to me. You bring up an interesting point.. if Ricoh could make their compact and bridge cameras support accessories made for the K-500 and K-50, it might be a further stepping stone into Ricoh-made (Pentax) dSLRs.

I hope news of an X-5 successor means there will be an MX-1 successor... preferably smaller than MX-1 but with an EVF.

Pentax needs to have some sort of consumer offering, so this is good news. I'm sure it will be announced at photokina, if not earlier.

Yes, but this is ending up being a 199 euro camera that is very large and doubtly making quality images at aperture 5.6 and 1000mm range.

I'm surprised there is still a market for that sort of camera, or that manufacturers would bother resourcing it.

Obviously there is, if they still make them...

In a few days actually.

Yes the market is for my sister in law. She thinks she can keep up with my K3 attached to my Sigma 500 plus my macro lenses.

Yeah, but there's certainly still interest in such cameras. I think the high-end market should focus on fixed lens cameras like the GR and fujis.

I happened to be in a major tourist area recently.
Among all the Canons and Nikons, and a few Sonys,
I only spotted three Pentaxes, and they were all X5s!

FWIW, I see cameras like the X-5 being used by people more often than DSLRs. I think people like having DSLR-like use and IQ without having the temptation of multiple lenses. The Sony ones are particularly popular in my area with Canon's being a close second.

My wife bought an X-5 earlier this year. It is light, easy to carry, and has a viewfinder. The viewfinder may be electronic, but it beats trying to frame anything with an LCD screen hands down.

Don't judge the camera by the likelihood of its appeal to you.
This is a super cheap budget model to be sold by truckloads and is made to remind people of a brand name of Pentax next time they intend to buy something more serious.
Pentax absolutely needs such toys. MX-1 was another one.
