Incredible! I thought an awesome product announcement like this would be made at Photokina. How can the competition possibly respond?

JK makes almost all of the superzooms for various brands (except Canon and Fuji, I think), and has for at least the past decade. That's why they are all so incredibly similar, and equally low-priced and low-spec'd.

That said, the X-5 is looking like a bargain now!

399 might be the msrp, but the equivalent Kodak has a 349 msrp. No wifi no gps no articulated screen, bad resolution lcd and evf. This is not worth more than 229,95 The Sony Canon and Fuji offerings are much better.

The price is too high compared to 60x superzooms.

I'm particularly disappointed in the sample images on the Ricoh website. Not a one of them strikes me as particularly good for selling a camera. They're all fine images, but all just lack a captivating quality that makes methink I could take great shots with this camera. Now, that Kodak -- those are some fine sample shots.

Or JKI are rebadging the same Chinese model as Ricoh..?

Either way is very disappointing.
Brand loyalty isn't what it used to be.

Not surprising at all, really. This Ricoh/ Pentax superzoom and the Kodak are both made by JK Imaging, who make many of the superzooms out there, regardless of the brand name on them. That's why "bridge cameras" all look surprisingly similar in specs and features, and have for a long, long time

The real news here is that this lesser camera is being sold as a Pentax not a Ricoh. No Ricoh, not even on the back.
Didn't Ricoh rename the Pentax point and shoots with the Ricoh name? Are they selling the Pentax name now?

Naming this camera a Pentax hurts the Pentax brand and is clearly another low blow.
