Not to be confused with the Minolta film camera of the same/similar name from the 70s

Well, it's hard not to. The Minolta is a full-frame :P

52x zoom? That reminds me of the older IQ Zoom cameras with the massive zoom extensions. Where's my 52x zoom lens for my Q?

Damn, they're intent on staying with inferior stabilization for video recording.
Olympus is looking better and better for my future dollars.

Also very sad they haven't added the tilting screen of the MX-1.

Pentax/Ricoh are not responding well to customer feedback and current trends are they

I'm surprised the X-5 has a successor.

This is a mere off-the-shelf Chinese product with a Pentax label on it.

Doesn't seem competitive at all compared to the competition. It's even lost the rear e-dial and tilting LCD screen from the X-5:

Well I guess that missing this years holiday season they will go on sale very fast running into the x-mass time at the end off the year. It's a nice plastic camera, but there are lots off offerings in the large zoom bridgecamera's competing on this one when it comes to cheap and not to impressive IQ.

Little developement on 5 years:

Side by side: pentax x70, pentax x90, pentax x5, pentax xg1

Oh good grief, so it has. What an impressive fail.
I'm surprised it doesn't have RICOH on the back..

Bugger all. Though I'm not sure that DPR are totally accurate. They cite Motion JPEG for the movie format when the Ricoh site says AVC/H.264.

That's disappointing.

Unfortunately, it does not come with Chinese pricing...

+1

Why didn't Ricoh put a "Ricoh" label on this one?

It would have made more sense to me to have anything "Pentax" weather-sealed or at least rugged and with an outdoors appeal and put a "Ricoh" label on left-field cameras with a high price. In that sense, the WG-* series should have kept the Pentax label and this XG-1 should have been a "Ricoh".

I hope at least the lens is very good (like the Olympus lens on the MX-1), otherwise the XG-1 may even do damage to the Pentax label.

Absolutely zero sex appeal and I don't see this as a very competent offering as a tool either. This is a camera category I thought they would have let behind. As this is not the case they could at least have taken a chance or two styling it. Is it me, or is the new Pentax post Ricoh takeover looking to be an extremely conservative company?

It is possible they make a quick buck on this, but in the long run, is it worth it? They struggle with brand perception and this is not going to help.

Update! I am sorry, but do they even take their potential customers half serious! I just had a look at the official image gallery on the product page and I don't know if I have ever seen worse examples used to showcase a product. Never mind they didn't care to rotate the photos for proper viewing. The ones I particular enjoy have tilted horizon and all. Who took those pictures? Please Pentax, show you care just a little bit! Or is it a deliberate strategy to only appeal to customers thinking: I am not and never will be a decent photographer. This is the kind of photos I aspire to take.

I believe the only appeal this camera aims for a low price tag
