Originally posted by pentaxian_tmb It all comes down to name recognition. If Pentax comes out with a bold, unique design, it is labeled as "quirky," "odd" and a "frankencamera". If cannikon comes out with the same thing, then they are being "bold and innovative."
When the Q began picking up in the home market of Japan, Nikon followed with the 1 (CX format, they say) and later Canon, with the EOS-M. It's hard to say that those two were in response against already-existing 1"-sensor cameras or the m4/3 system of other players, because they could've done so long ago.
A bigger and more obvious follow-me example was when Pentax came out with the myriad color combo's for the K-x and K-r. All of a sudden (and in small varieties) Canon and Nikon came out with colored bodies too (for the 1100D, 1200D, D3100, D3200, and 100D/SL1)
