Sigma Telephoto 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro for Pentax is discontinued

Sigma told me today that the Sigma Telephoto 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro lens is discontinued. Currently, there are no Sigma macros for Pentax mount.

There are still some in the supply chain, including at B&H:

Whaa? I just sold the 180mm macro regretfully because I doubt I'll ever see another one (but couldn't afford to keep it), but am holding on to my Sigma 70, sharpest lens I've ever seen. Just a fantastic lens.

Still available through Newegg.com (via 47th st photo) as well. I only know this, because I'm always in the process of finding a justification for the purchase -- lol. Have the Tamron 90mm, and I'm completely happy with it, but the FL of the Sigma seems really useful, not to mention the smoking reviews the lens gets. Just tough to justify the $500...

I looked at all the options for a macro lens, and ended up with a Sigma 70 macro. Great macro, small enough to take along as an "extra" when you're not anticipating needing it. I know the Pentax has the 100 macro... this was just more what I needed. It's a sad day. Oh well... I've got mine. I'd suggest to anyone sitting on the fence to make up their mind.

Mine went over a cliff and dropped into a river (literally) -- now that the insurance stuff is settled I need to go shopping. Sigma offered me a deal on one lens, instead I asked for a deal on a macro and they told me the bad news.

I'm torn between snapping up an exact replacement while I can, or getting the Pentax 100mm WR macro which is half the weight and also a fantastic lens.

The reason I like the 70 is that 70mm is right in my preferred range for APS-c. portraits. The 100 would be perfect for an FF camera but...that wouldn't be good for a Pentax.

It is a good middle range for non-macro work as well, I like walking around with it outdoors doing handheld work. It typically goes for $330-$340 USD on the used market, which may well go up if the news gets out so you could grab one on ebay or wherever. There are probably a lot more of these out there than some of the others they discontinued (like the 180, and the 8-16), so I expect you'll be able to get one from somewhere or other for years to come, but prices could change...

Yes, and the reason I picked Sigma in the first place. (Also the 100mm is a lot more money!) I used it for a lot of stuff, not just macros. The weight is a real killer for me since I have hand problems, but I am not sure the 100mm will be as versatile.

If only that money tree would bloom, I'd buy both!

I have enjoyed this lens on both Pentax and Canon bodies. Perfect focal length for cropped bodies. Just about my sharpest lens.
Damn shame it is being discontinued for K-mount.

Perhaps they have discontinued this model, but not abandoned 70mm macro lenses in K mount.

Maybe they are just planning a 'Art' or 'Contemporary' remake of the 70mm, like they have done with several other designs (the Sigma 17-70 springs immediately to mind, ditto what they did with their three 19/30/60 NEX primes).

Looks like more Pentax lenses are going out of the programline or at least not so easy available. In one of our biggest internet shops only 6 lenses from Sigma with K-mount are in stock (they carry everything). Only 30mm/f1.4, 35mm/f1.4, 10-20mm, 18-200mm, 18-250mm and 150-500mm are in stock.

oh great another sigma lens I really don't need, but thought I might someday want but now I have to buy before it goes extinct.

damn, between a 70-200 and a 70 macro there goes my money for a K3. bad sigma.

why can't somebody anybody release a 28-105ish for K mount that matches the L Glass? Please?????

I've got 10-40 and 100-300 covered, but there's NOTHING out there in a mid range zoom.

PS - And no the 50-135 doesn't count because it focuses slower than a slug in salt water! I will never ever ever ever ever again own a pentax sdm lens. they are worthless for any moving subject

Sigma 70-200 is also gone.
K-mount lenses from third party manufacturers are rapidly disappearing. What a blessed mount we have ...

Yes please

So no more 105 macro, no more 70-200 and no more 70 macro... And a bunch of their new (a), (s) and (c) lenses are still not available in K mount. I highly doubt that it is because of a "refresh" of the series since all are still available in every other mount. I'm putting my tinfoil hat back on and I'm screaming conspiracy!!!
