I have a Mac mini I bought the same year as my K-x. There have been 4 OS upgrades since then and none has cost me more than $20. The last one was free and the next one will be too when it is ready for download in a few weeks. And my 2009 Mac mini will be able to run it.
And now your Mac has been changed intobiggie iPhone with neon colours all over.
I don't defend Windows, I hate it (no, I'm not Linux user) but Apple is really turning their Mac users into kikoolol addicts.
A shame, it used to be great OS.

Now we're stuck with Linux (a very nice idea but impractical for many reasons), Windows (well, do I really need to describe?) and Mac (which came from a specialist OS to kikoolol fashion addict OS optimized for getting money out of the real lucrative business for Apple).
I don't blame Apple from the POV of making money, they do that very well. I don't need no stinking iPhone in my work computer. Note that the same applies to M$ Win 8. What were they thinking ?

In fact there's really a couple poisons and take your pick. It is really down to 'which one has the less cons for me'. A pity.

The K-01 has many rubber gripper ribs, this has an indent that appears to be narrower than the diameter of my finger. As for cameras with smaller/no grip, I must admit that my K-3 is the only camera on my shelf with a real grip and I am thankful for it. My Super Program as two protrusions that are labeled front and rear grip, but both are ineffective unless teamed with the accessory case. When the case is on, that camera works very nicely due to the shape of the ramps for both grips. It is easily the best-handling SLR I own.*

Steve

* The order of precedence for the top five on my shelf is Super Program, K-3, Ricoh XR7, FED-2, and Ricoh XR-2s. The worst is probably the Yashica 44 TLR.
Funny, I frequently hold my SuperA with three fingers on the hand (front) grip (camera vertical) and no strap. Works extremely well when no big lens on it.

In the context of this derailed thread, I can't do anything that to give a like to this post. Maybe some people will understand.

And that is exactly the point of this camera. just like when Samsung started marketing its smartphones to the young generation and positioning the iPhone as "your parent's phone", ie the most unfashionable thing possible. Want to get ahead of the big boys, just start marketing to their users kids!

I think there was some relevance in the side-argument about computers: it shows how intensely people nowadays identify themselves with the brands of technology they've chosen to buy. With the K-S1 Pentax has made a commercial decision to try to appeal to the huge market of casual snapshooters who just want better quality than they can get with their smartphones. And a lot of existing Pentax users obviously feel threatened by that--what they want instead is a "serious" full frame camera. Of course, most of them wouldn't actually BUY the full-frame camera. Their egos just need the reassurance of knowing that it exists.

I disagree here. Usually Pentax has sold more high-end models than entry-level models. K20D vs. K200D, K-5 vs. K-r etc. It seems like there are lot of Pentax users that always select the best K-mount DSLR available.

This is true only from a Pentaxian perspective. Those aren't high end models. Those aren't cheap junk either I agree, but the K10/k20/k7/k5k/3 etc aren't high end IMO. Advanced certainly, and very well done.
But a full frame K3 (not a real new body but an adapted K3 with ff sensor) sold for 2000? I doubt most of this forum would do anything but whine vehemently.

Meanwhile, I saw this shared by a girl friend (who's into fashion and similar stuff) on Facebook...

I guess this is the market Pentax wants the K-S1 to be appealing for?

yes those are LED's on those shoes. blinking LED's, even!

Wow. I only use my SE FDHD for playing games. And I like to watch the old Afterdark screensaver in B&W. Sadly the last time I tried to boot my Quadra 605 nothing happened. I think the power supply finally failed as it had a good PRAM battery.

I did get to use my Beige G3 to retrieve some files from a floppy disk and burn them to a CD for someone recently. It seem the USB floppy drives that are currently available are incapable of reading anything other than 1.4 MB disks.

Apples vs. Oranges? Absolutely, though my self-built PC is that nasty tan color rather than orange. It all comes down to what tool best addresses the job to be done. The Mac Mini I could have bought for $699 in 2008 (I know the price because I actually bought one for a lady friend*) would not have met my needs at the time.
I agree that the mini was a bad investment in 2008. The model they were selling at the time had been around since 2007 and had Intel GMA 950 graphics. By 2008 the writing was on the wall that Apple wasn't going to support graphics chips that didn't support OpenCL. So I waited until the mini was updated with the GeForce 9400M before buying. It also helped that they lowered the price of the base model to $599. $699 was too much for a computer with GMA graphics.

Yep, at least the mac oriented drives (info from years ago of course, didn't try recently).
A good old PC drive (internal) with Transmac may very well deliver better results.

I think the LEDs are completely functional in this way....

The camera has combined the timer function and smile detection function into one new means of delayed photo capture. Shutter button is pressed, camera waits until smiles are detected, and then at that moment activates the shutter mechanism. The LEDs illuminate at that moment to let the subjects know the photo has been taken.

If that's true then it shows how disastrous Pentax's under-investment in marketing has been in the digital era. A camera maker should aim for its entry-level models to hugely outsell its top-of-the-range enthusiast cameras, in the knowledge that a percentage of those entry-level beginners will go on to be the top-of-the-range buyers of the future. To me the K-S1 looks like exactly what it should be: a cheap and harmless-looking gateway drug, designed to get users hooked so you can sell them the serious stuff in the future.
