K-01 design was at least consistent and modern, from top to bottom.

But this is the tertiary adjunct S1 to the K-unimatrix zero.
Which in human language means it is totally weird; two spaceships from different eras collided and the wreckage is one ambivalent shape that fluctuates in the space-time continuum.
This is the Borg design; organic remains of the past body meets inorganic implant. No aesthetics, just the pure thought that it does some function. Green lights and accents add to the Borg charm.

It is so weird and visually dyslexic the audience it was aimed to will love it to death. I mean, they will be assimilated. Even more so if the kit lenses are redesigned to match this. Then the resistance will be futile.

I must say, i'm underwhelmed with the design aesthetic. Very curious as to what's going on in-house. They scraped the eccentric K-30 for the very conventional lookijg K-50. . .and now this?

They must redesign a pair of kit lenses to match this Borg design. Then it will have more appeal.
It is pity there is no picture with a SDM DA40 on it; the green ring on the lens, its smooth look will look perfect on this!

I suppose there are colored versions in the works. Maybe black is actually the ugliest color; I'll reserve my judgment until the actual camera arrives

Q-S1 colour scheme may be the colour scheme for the next 2015 season for Pentax products.

I can say they only need to redesign a couple of kit lenses to match this thing, and it will be perfect. Extra LEDs around filter threads are a must!

---------- Post added 08-19-2014 at 09:09 PM ----------

Anyone noticed the LED around the shutter release button is in one picture green colour, and in the second red colour.
This means camera will communicate when it establishes a focus lock/confirmation through LEDs?

Great idea; finally good "macro" photos with the kit lens (Actually see the Optio WG-1 which incorporated the same idea).

Green in photographic mode and red in video mode.

Focus lock is signalled by the grip's LEDs flashing when one takes a selfie.

Looks like a DSLR who wanted to be a bridge camera.

Purpose could be:

1. Lightyear counter to fullframe release
2. Likes counter on social networks
3. Klingon stealth mode activation
4. Selphie timer counter
5. Polar light simulator for long night exposures
6. WiFi router

You forgot the one I think is the best :

"OK, since I'm not under NDA this time, here's the truth about the LED lights and the lit-up 'OK' at the back. The 'S' in the name stands for 'Social Networking'. This camera is for the social networking crowd. The grip is thinner so you can hold it backwards more easily. When you take a photo, it will automatically be uploaded to the social site(s) of your choice. Every time you get a 'like' or 'upvote' a green LED lights up. This gives you an indication whether you should take more of the same or try something new, like showing more cleavage. 5 green LEDs mean you're obviously popular and a great poseographer (or half naked), but now everyone can see this while you take the pictures. This in turn will encourage your friends to join you in your selfies, making you even more popular. If you get too many down-votes, the LEDs go red. If you get 5 red LEDs the camera shuts down for 8 hours."
