Pentax has always been an enthusiast brand and I do hope this K-S1 and Q-S1, then K-5, K-500 and Q7 of yesteryear is not everything they will show this Photokina because these are all fun / entry level cameras and ideas. If they believe 645D and Z is their professional offering, their weakest spot right now is what was traditionally been their strongest: something very tangible for enthusiasts.

Or do they believe K-3 is all they need in the next 2 years to address that issue?!

Yes, indeed! It is a Sony product and in addition to hovering it does excellent 4K video.

Steve
I think it looks interesting in a good way.

Screen capture courtesy of Google Translate from some eastern European country, I think. Pretty funny even though I kinda like the camera.

I thought you'd welcome this camera. Not so long ago you were advocating a light weight K-mount body to use with the limited lenses. Is it the styling that's putting you off? Does it have to look retro?

In a small, mean, selfish dark cave of my heart, I hope the K-S1 treads the same path as the K-01 - a quirky, excellent camera that most folks disdain.

Then I'll eventually buy it cheap, and by enjoying it I'll be flipping off the stodgy camera community.

I'd suggest the dragon from Ljubljana would give it a sense of feistiness.

I'm waiting for them to miniaturize and integrate the technology into their imaging division so I can throw out my tripod.

I think styling is crazy. Looks like lots of plastic too. Maybe great for teenagers but not my cup of tea.
With enthusiast market offer, I meant something more upmarket from this, refined, and less looking like a lit up Christmas tree.

Fair enough. Of course, things like design are very personal things and if you don't like it, you don't like it. All I would say is that things can look very different in pictures to how they are in real life. I'm going to reserve judgement until I have a real one in my hands.

The more I contemplate the camera, the more I like it. This is one handsome beast. If Pentax make an avantgarde-looking camera (K-01), people complain. If Pentax make a traditional-looking camera (K50), people complain. This camera reminds me a lot of the Nx30, but adds some refinement to the looks of the latter. Good job, Pentax! That being said, those green disco lights on the grip...whoever came up with this idea sure has a sense of humour.

This is what I hope the green disco lights can do: when you achieve perfect focus, for instance with a manual lens, all five will blink. Basically this would mean that you can take dodgy selfies with an old manual lens without needing the assistance of a swivel screen. And I would have loved to be there when a Pentax representative demonstrates this brilliant feature to the world press at Photokina.

Looks like a transitional product that's just waiting for the chance to toss the prism and mount. It almost looks like those elements are modular and have been slipped on over a Sony body.

That lens and body are also stylistically as far apart as one could imagine. (but it probably would look fine with the DA 20-40 on board)

Pentax seem to sell their prototypes and with this product they seem true to form.

At this point, it's difficult for me to imagine that they have any kind of specific beliefs, direction, or even concrete ideas guiding them. It just seems like they like to release a general hodgepodge of products, some good, some great, some not so great, and see what happens.

The one thing that does not appear to be going on is that they pay any attention whatsoever to what their most ardent fans are interested in.

Now that I've thought about it a bit more I wonder if there's a chance of a modular dual DSLR/MILC system where the mount and prism are interchangeable. It seems ridiculous but stranger things have been known to happen.
