I probably should not have used the anniversary model as an example. Any of a number of film SLRs would have worked better.* This page shows how the space is allocated:

To see the impact of the flash, simply flip it up and imagine it gone.

* FWIW, the prism housing has been used as sort of a catch-all space for a long time. On a couple of my film cameras, the prism itself is flanked by integrated circuit modules.
