I thought that reproducing an image of the four-way controller on the rear screen (in conjunction with existing settings) would be a bit pointless if it wasn't a touch screen.

Ugly, pointless, stupid.

No mirror, but full pentaprism housing - this is not a design feature this is just hopeless. Same dimensions as SLR, what is the advantage here. No dedicated lenses? Green LEDs are NOT SEXY.
I thought it could not get much worse - that was before this camera.

What do you mean, it DOES have a mirror AND a glass pentaprism. It's a DSLR, not a MILC.

I'm getting the feeling that you don't like it...

The consensus seems to be that it does have a mirror.

I quite like the look. Its bold and different. If you already have a Pentax K30/5/3 then this camera is not aimed at you. You already have a great camera. No, this camera is to entice new people to the Pentax system through a modern and unique design. Im guessing it will most likely appeal to the younger photographer whose perspective on what a DSLR should look like is not yet ingrained.

It isn't pointless because the reproduction shows the actual settings (as opposed to repeating the button labels).

Very good idea, AFAIC, in particular for a camera that appears to be aimed at beginners and makes deliberate attempts to avoid deterring novices with elaborate buttons and complex interfaces.

The most innovator DSLR design in years. With clean lines, clean curves, stylish general look, I think this camera will be a big success for Pentax, specially for young generation and women. For people who consider that retro is the only beautiful camera design, probably not.

It does have a mirror. Lots of pictures of DSLRs are taken with the mirror up to show off the sensor.

DA35 AL would be a nice combo in a kit with this camera.
Cheap, small and light with good performance, also available in a lot of colors.

And as this has been in practice on all Pentax entry level DSLR (since at least K-x), there is probably no reason to stop now.

27 pages and not one of people disliking it pointed out that this abomination fails so bad, Ricoh wouldn't even sign it.

Probably because that's perceived as one of its rare advantages.

I'll chime in with others that I also think the white actually looks OK-ish, but I'm worried it doesn't have enough black to integrate well with a black lens...

Looking at the blue controller on the back, I wonder if it might actually be 8-way...?

The white version is definitely the prettier one. But how does a white camera look after a few weeks of use? I know for sure it wouldn't work for me.
I have the white K-30. It goes everywhere with me and I have used it pretty much every day for a year and a half. It's not dirty at all, but there is some dust/lint in the grooves. The slick finish doesn't allow dirt or grime to stick.
