Never purchased a tablet. I'm not sure what use it is, either, but other people like them.

To me if I'm carrying something around that's too big to fit in my pocket, I want it to have a user interface that's easy.

Never had a tablet either. A couple years ago I bought an iPad for my wife, for her b-day. She made me return it, unequivocally.

I guess we're not a super-high-tech family (hence Pentax? )

So yeah the K-S1 is definitely not aimed at us... though the small size is nice, I have to admit it. At a different price point I'd consider it. In white.

After buying an iPad for a trip out west to do email and stuff on... my big question has been , what do I do with it now? With the FLUcard... ok half an hour later I'm bored... Apps, haven't found any I really like, I have the bird ID app, but a new bird turns up maybe once a year. When we go to the coffee shop, the wife likes it if I talk to her, not stare at some device. I do shopping lists on the notepad on my phone. I use it to show my friends pictures, maybe 5 times a year, but an iPad is a horrible thing to manage a picture library on. It basically requires the same library be maintained on my computer. I've had issues getting pdfs on and off of it. It's just a confusing piece of aggravation. Can you sell mine too?
I don't have a tablet but my wife does and she uses it a lot. In fact, she uses it as a camera far more than she uses her Panny LX7. Basically, she takes a photo and almost instantly sends it off to someone or puts it on Facebook. If she wants to keep it, it will just show up in her iPhoto Photostream on our computer.

When my wife and daughter started to use iPhone, they put aside P&S camera and DSLR. They use sometimes, but very rare.

Here we go - do you remember the Pentax prototype from 1997 (sic!),

Old mirrorless prototype from Pentax

Apparently FF and with a fluCard we are right there ;-) Maybe some design streamlining

My wife also uses her iphone only for camera and shares via facebook. Honestly the iphone is as good as most point and shoots it just lacks any manual controls which she doesn't care about.

Check this guys work out, pretty interesting. I know a lot of photojournalists get great candid's of soldiers with iphones, nobody realized your taking pictures.

I use a Nexus 7 tablet but never for photo's. Just web browsing, scanner, signing pdf's and mapping. The aviation mapping apps are amazing. Most pilots use a tablet in addition to the dedicated GPS onboard aircraft.

I suspect that the target market for the K-S1 is people who actually use and appreciate smart phones and tablets.

I'm not a huge fan of the K-50. It's okay, pretty standard looks really, but I'd still go for a K-50 before I went for this one. Not because the K-50 is a better camera because of course it isn't, not with all these new specs, but because I wouldn't want to be seen with THE THING. What is the sense of making a great new camera if it's so FUGLY that only a few people maybe will buy it?

"FUGLY"... this image, posted on DPReview, is quite relevant for the subject:

The main point of this thread is that it's not necessarily fugly to it's supposed target audience.

At least I think that's the main point. It's hard to tell.

I was quite surprised when my friend was telling me last week that he and his wife mostly use the iPhone now, and he's been starting to sell his Canon L lenses (he has a 1D Mk IV). It's also fuinny that he said he can't have a small DSLR because he likes the professional camera size - but that this is the same reason it pretty much just stays at home now. So for him it's either the huge camera or the iPhone - he can't possibly use anything in between...

People don't make sense, and that makes it extra difficult for companies to figure out what products to put out there!

Same here, my wife is much more fond of her iPad mini than I am of mine (bulkier older version though), and her Panny ZX2 is collecting dust.

Agree! I saw quite a few like this, thinking bigger means better and professional, at least for SLR gears.
Have to admit most L lenses are great, even outstanding, I prefer smaller gear that could produce >85% quality. My 50-135 stays home most time.
So I think K-S1 is a good step towards right direction. It is only priced a little higher than i would like. maybe the street price will be better and it will go further down soon.
