New super-zoom from Sigma

Lenstip (Optyczne.pl) has posted that new 18 - 300 mm f 3.5 - 6.3 Contemporary super-zoom from Sigma is coming, available in K mount. Sigma announced and 150 - 600mm f 5 - 6,3 and 2 TC (1.4 and 2,0) as well, but only C/N/S mounts. Interesting, that I have not found these lenses on Sigma site...

great, and will sell for around 475 Euros in Europe, hopefully in Australia will be cheaper, our GST is much lower than VAT in Europe.
if it will be as good as my Sigma 18-250 Macro HSM non OS I will definitely get one.
we do not have much hope of getting Tamron 16-300 in Pentax mount.

f5 at 150 mm :/
pity K mount is not available but not sure it is a stellar lens either
150-600mm f4 would have been much more appealing

This one already weights 2,860 g / 100.88 oz. and will cost more than USD1,500. Would you be prepared to pay ca. USD10,000 for a 7,000 g 150-600mm f/4?

And probably much more than 10000 $. Remember that the famous Pentax superzoom 250-600 was f5.6 only. for a 600 4, there are only primes, no zoom.

150-600 F/4 is about the same as 300-800 F/5.6, which they sell for $8 or $9k or something.

When I remember how were Pentax and Sigma back in 1982 when I entered photography, Sigma is a real success story. And Pentax... how the hell did they managed to go the inverse way than sigma ?

For some reason there is no F4 tele zoom in this territory; only f5.6 zooms

Sure, there's a big difference between the 200-400mm F/4 and 150-600 F/4. Really big.

I would not pay 10kusd, probably 5kusd instead.
7kg is too much for me...

It is a matter of many things combined. Such as...

Even if Pentax released the ME-F (ME with autofocus system in a special lens) already in 1982, this was too early and the technique was not ready yet. When Minolta released an in-body autofocus system (I believe this was in 1984 or 1985) and a new serie of autofocus lenses, Pentax was taken by surprise and was late to the party. Eventually Pentax did release the new SF-serie in 1987 with new autofocus lenses, but Pentax really didn't believed in autofocus. Their manual focus cameras, such as the P30, Super A, Program A, LX etc. was among the best available from any maker back then. Pentax made a full lineup of A-serie of manual focus lenses, better than any maker at that time.

Unfortunately the market shifted to autofocus and Pentax lost sales on it's SLR-business. The new Espio range of compact cameras earned money for Pentax so Pentax could still release new SLR-bodies and lenses. Pentax made a third go at autofocus with the innovative Z-serie of lenses. But those cameras were too innovative, too strange and unconventional compared to Pentax manual focus SLR's. Highly rated by magazines, but not a success on the market.

Pentax then tried to combine their last successful SLR-serie - the M-serie - with modern autofocus and metering technology, and the MZ-serie was born. This serie was an instant success and Pentax started to raise again...

Then this thing called DSLR started to come... and Pentax was, again, late to the party. They finally did release the *ist D but market reception was poor.

Now it is 2014 and Pentax is a minor player in the market, a niche player and tries it's best to earn money. It's not about selling the most cameras, but to stay profitable and to release good cameras at low costs.

Pentax has some very nice and fine cameras today, and also a nice lineup of lenses. I'm happy that they are still around in times when Contax, Yashica, Minolta, Konica and others has left.
