I know they tend to want to keep sizes smaller...and that makes sense for having those kinds of lenses in the lineup as well for those concerned with size and weight...but some of us want lenses that PERFORM as well and don't care as much about the weight vs having a useable aperture and professional level gear.
Then you'll be waiting for the large diameter zoom lens (Adam thinks it'll be in the 70-200 range) that Pentax will show the prototype of alongside this 16-85.

People this isnt a replacement for the 18-55 or 18-135, its a replacement for the 16-45mm. This is what I've been looking for a reasonable cost, lightweight 16mm wide WR lens for hiking. The reason why its variable aperture is to lower costs but it also brightens it up the short end...which is the end I would use. Its a perfect walk around lens. The difference between 16mm and 18mm is significant its the same as going from 28mm to 24mm in full frame terms. http://canonlensblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/24mm-vs-28mm-vs-35mm-len...ifference1.jpg If pentax releases this lens and its close in price to the 18-135mm, its on the top of my wish list.

It'll be on display tomorrow, most likely. That should give us more insight beyond what the roadmap indicates.

I hope there is a 70-200...and hope it has the DC in it as well...that range needs to be fast focusing!! And then needs a little brother to replace the super slow DA* 16-50

Canon has a VERY popular 24-105 which I think they even bundle in kits...but it is a f/4 lens!! And on full frame with awesome high ISO capabilities you can make this work and not have as hefty a piece of glass as a f/2.8 But 3.5-5.6? no thanks!
16-85 is the same focal length as a 24-105mm on FF. This lens will be 2/3 to half the price. The 24-105 is a L lens, the cheapest worst performing L lens but still an L lens...this is going to be either the replacement for the 18-55mm or a lens like the 16-45mm that is affordable but lower in price than the 16-50mm f2.8

I guess this may become standard kit lens in the future which is not necessarily bad, which can be a sign that they are finally replacing lenses with DC motors for silent focus. Hopefully they have improved AF speed (and optical formula?) as they update lenses too. Not a lens many enthusiasts have hoped for but it's still a step in the right direction I guess.

At the right price (and performance), I'd likely jump all over the chance to buy a 16-85 lens from Pentax. Sounds like a great range for travel photography.

Would be pretty interesting had it been a constant f4 lens.
A refresh (WR and DC motor) of the 16-45mm f4 would be pretty cool.

Honestly I'm interested in this lens if it hits the right marks in size and features. I had a 18-135WR and I didn't enjoy it much (despite it being an outstanding performer). I'm actually looking to buy a 18-55WR just to use on rainy days because it's so much cheaper and lighter than the 18-135.

I agree with this. I think could also serve as a replacement for the 17-70 in the lineup. This and the WR 55-300 would make for a nice 2-lens kit, with some overlap to minimise the need to change lenses.

This would also do well as a kit zoom. More expensive, than the 18-55 but also more versatile. F2.8 4.5 would make it much bigger and heavier and close to the Da* 16-50 2.8 in price. I would not be surprised at all when this lens is bundled with the K-3 as a kit. And is is not a stupid 18-70 thank god.

This was always going to be the least exciting of the new K-mount lenses currently flagged on the road map. Bring on the new ultra-wide zoom!!

that 16-85 lens sounds good. Do you know about if it's fixed aperture or not? a 2.8-4 or even a fixed 4 would be sweet.

So it's official. I was hoping for the fixed f4, but I'll still look close to it, thanks!
