This lens is not "truly" weather resistant, only AW/DA* lenses are.
WR is a simplified version that provides limited sealing.
WR is resitant, no more.
AW is the proper high end sealing (DA* and new 645 lenses) (although AW is often not well marketed).

Don't do what heie did to his DA* in Afghanistan to a WR lens, that might end badly. But I'm sure the 16-65 will survive a pouring rain. I'm sure there are seals in the telescoping elements.

...those were frightening pictures indeed... a shame that the whole report got erased... I've always surmised that he had some sort of authorization!

Why doesn't Pentax just stick to the "green" ring they old DA lenses use to have. It was a metallic green which made the K-x cameras stand out among all the others now it's red ring which reminds me of Canon and now they want to introduce a Gold rings which reminds me of Nikon ?

I believe they went to red to distinguish the HD coatings from the SMC coatings. And gold rings are not new, they indicate the lens is a 'DA*' and have been around for a long time.

No one likes the red rings. It's really like ditching all history, sad really...

Maybe it covers FF circle? That mythical Pentax K-F1 will have to have a kit lens too...
That would be nice!

I rather like the red ring on my HD DA35/2.8 Limited Macro, and the green rings on my SMC Limiteds, and the gold rings on my DA*s, and the black banding on my FA*s, and the green buttons on my FA Limiteds. Mostly, though, I like the images they help me make.

I do not see the need for this lens. It is range improvement over the da* 16-50 but it does not seem to have the IQ specs of that lens. Maybe I am missing something.

You are missing the fact that these are two totally different lenses aimed at different target market, they don't compliment each other.

This is a 'me too' product. Canikon have them, so if Pentax makes one there's one less thing to complain about, and if Pentax wants to pick up Canikon leftover customers (low end, of course, that's where the masses are) it's a way to offer the same kit but in a 'superior' Pentax outfit.

Interesting and, to me, persuasive argument. Thanks.
