Already? Wasn't it about 750 at launch? It's dropping faster than I had anticipated...

I don't know what the announced price was for Japan but the advertised 69,800 Yen in the link works out to $593.

The HD PENTAX-DA 16-85mmF3.5-5.6ED DC WR lens will be available at retailers nationwide and at Digital Cameras by RICOH Imaging - Waterproof Digital Camera - Digital SLR in November 2014 for a suggested retail price of $749.95.
I also remember someone citing preorder prices at either Adorama or B&H (can't recall) and it was almost the same.
Ah! there it is...

72,540 JPY in Kitamura on the announcement date but that was a street price too.

Yen right now is very weak, that is why there are so many rebates going on as we speak. I think that is part of reason for the early price drop of the K-S1

Maybe for you, Norm, . . .

But that's "the way people take pictures, not the way numerical evaluation of lenses works".
. . . but the way I take pictures, edge performance is important, especially at longer focal lengths.
If the shots that have appeared on t'Internet over the last day or so are anything to go by, the DA16-85 isn't going to be the lens for people like you and me who expect a reasonable degree of sharpness even in the corners

Yes, there's a price to pay for the convenience of a 5x zoom.

Well... let's see some typical use cases...
1. panoramas: at or near 18mm, stopped down, sharpness not likely to be an issue
2. portraits: at or near 85mm, "wide open", not open enough for portraits, but still let's think it through.
If the subject's eye(s) are in a third then it really depends on which part of the face goes near the edge.
I can think that some softness could accentuate the ethereal qualities of a female portrait, but it really depends too much on framing.
This however is not a portrait lens, and in general use I'd agree with you.

There just isn't that much room for improvement over the 18-135, straight up in IQ.
That's the point I was making some time ago... price is higher, size is comparable, IQ is comparable...
Maybe AF is more reliable?

I think most here have seen the price announced for the USA. It's Japan I was wondering about.

When it was announced in Japan, the comment about price was "Open price: around 75,000 yen".

That's the usual way they talk about prices. In fact, it will start selling for just under that. For example, one popular camera specialist is Fujiya Camera in West Tokyo. They have it for 72,500 yen.

It should be in the shops by now. If I have a chance this weekend, I'll stop by a shop and see how it feels to handle. I'm interested to se whether it feels more like a DA18-135 or a DA*16-55 in terms of size and weight. I know you can get this information from the specs, but I always find it difficult to imagine how it feels in the hand - how front-heavy, how dense, how quick and quiet to focus, etc.

---------- Post added 11-22-14 at 11:35 AM ----------

And I find this deal for the K-5 IIs with the 16-85 for 119,800 very tempting.
http://www.fujiya-camera.jp/shopdetail/000000036291/042/009/Y/page1/recommend/

Or with the K-3 for 139,800.

I don't know how many people on this forum ever travel to Tokyo to take advantage of offers like this, but the current exchange rate is making things look cheaper here. It's irrelevant to me since I earn in yen.

will wait and see review on IQ. If IQ is just good, rather than top-tier ... meh... Don't get why bother having it
