Only 5 results on eBay ranging from $945 to $688. So not even Japan or gray sellers have this in stock. Either production is really slow to ramp up or they are selling so fast no one has any in stock.

Adam, what's the status on the 16-85 review? Have you got your copy yet?

A 16-50 do not cover 85mm. Take this lense and you'll have more difficulties framing architectural details than with the 16-85.

As for price, I agree it is far too expensive for now.

Canon EF 24-70mm 2.8 <---- expensive top of the line all around zoom lens.
Nikon 24-85mm F2.8-4.. 595.... <---- Pretty sweet lens for the price.
Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 1400.00 <---- expensive but one hell of a lens. But i can shoot this anywhere. inside outside this is an ALL AROUND LENS.

I think im in the wrong section of the forum..

I just dont think this lens performance wise is worth 800+ dollars.
because everything is a compromise. If you want the best zoom lens for light gathering indoors, get the sigma 18-35 1.8. It gathers even more light than a 2.8 But from what you write, you would be happy with a 16-50 2.8 if it was reliable. hence there is your first compromise. You are satisfied with 2.8, eventhough 1.8 is even better indoors.

And when looking at the Nikon alternative Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Lens | B&H Photo the pentax isn't that much more expensive.

you could even get a sigma or tamron 2.8 zoom lens for indoors.

yes, so they just have to make it 1.2 constant and into a pancake, then people will be happy (probably not, they alwasy will have things to complain about)

The sony/carl zeiss E 16-70 f4 is $999. It has the same number of elements and same number of aspherical in a different formula. Its a much smaller lens and only 55mm front filter size (the DA 16-85 is 72mm) because its a e-mount lens and the short flange distance means smaller elements. The pentax is cheaper at launch yet people are still complaining about the price.

People in the DPR Sony Forum complain a great deal about pricing on the Sony Zeiss 16-70mm, including me. It is overpriced by $200 to $300, IMO.

OTOH, the HD 16-85mm seems about right for what it is, and considering that the initial price will likely drop with time.

Hi gang. I've only read a couple pages of this thread, so forgive me if I'm repeating something. But is it possible that this lens will be the new kit lens on the high-end bodies... with the new collapsible lens being the kit offering on the lower ones?

Of course it is possible, but don't expect more than a $100 rebate from buying separately. It is also possible that there will be kits with the K-3 and the new 18-50 yadayadayada, and I've already seen it on a k-s1.

Sure it is possible. But they have offered cameras in various kits anyway. You can get k-3 with 18-135 or with 18-55 and 50-200 and so on. I suspect they will do both and offer 18-50 and 16-85 and probably 18-135 as 'kit' packages. Ricoh does not seem to have any aversion to putting out a lot of different SKUs.

The price doesn't justify even thinking of upgrading. WR is great , but so what if its only 2mm wider. I would consider adding it to the arsenal , but the average price VS. lens mediocrity Kills it !

It's early days yet, so the regular asking price should come down,
and then there'll be the special sale prices, like Black Friday and so on.

We might even start to see it bundled with some mid- to high-end bodies.
