f/3.5-5.6... BLAH! f/4 or f/2.8 or f/1.4 or not at all interesting to me. Slow lenses with slow autofocus and less and less options available from third parties for Pentax makes me seriously wonder how much longer I will be a Pentax user

It'd better have some redeeming feature over the 18-135!

Gosh, you are difficult men, and this peculiar standard zoom makes pentax offer really attractive, beeing at the top of everything, WR included...
I await it's compactness with quite some impatience.

Does standard zoom imply that this will be the new kit lens?

Well that would be a nice replacement for 18-55.

I don't think asking what makes it different from the 18-135 is being difficult. Gaining 2mm and losing 85-135mm as the paper spec isn't going to turn heads. Now if it's a very small zoom (internal zoom please!) or very sharp zoom edge to edge, that would be great to have in comparison to the 18-135.

Yeah but I'll lose 85-135mm

This will correspond roughly to a 24-120mm in full frame terms, which is a rather common focal length for a kit lens (FF variants are offered by Sigma, Nikon, Sony, and Canon). So this lens would certainly make sense in the APS-C world as a non-superzoom alternative to the 18-55mm without being too expensive (like the 16-50). The aperture rating does seem to be a bit slow, but that's what you have to do to keep the size down, after all.

Maybe it covers FF circle? That mythical Pentax K-F1 will have to have a kit lens too...

Canon has a VERY popular 24-105 which I think they even bundle in kits...but it is a f/4 lens!! And on full frame with awesome high ISO capabilities you can make this work and not have as hefty a piece of glass as a f/2.8 But 3.5-5.6? no thanks!

Would be amazingly surprising if it does. Although I'll settle for being the size of the 18-55mm or just a little larger with internal zoom and internal focus. I'm a sucker for internal zoom and focus after having used my Tamron 70-200 and the Tokina 28-70.

I know they tend to want to keep sizes smaller...and that makes sense for having those kinds of lenses in the lineup as well for those concerned with size and weight...but some of us want lenses that PERFORM as well and don't care as much about the weight vs having a useable aperture and professional level gear.

if it is a new kit lens with DC to replace the noisy skew drive... and with better range.... then I give it a thumbs up. I think this is likely the case given the 3.5-5.6 f stop
