The reason why its variable aperture is to lower costs but it also brightens it up the short end...which is the end I would use. Its a perfect walk around lens. The difference between 16mm and 18mm is significant its the same as going from 28mm to 24mm in full frame terms. http://canonlensblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/24mm-vs-28mm-vs-35mm-len...ifference1.jpg If pentax releases this lens and its close in price to the 18-135mm, its on the top of my wish list.
Except that 16-45mm will actually be faster than this lens except at 16mm... it's kind of a sidegrade.

It better be as good as it can get, or it will be hard to justify this lens. At least it's WR I guess.

I'm actually more interested in the "large diameter zoom"; The article stats it will probably be a 70-200, FF incoming?

Upgrading the16-45 with HD and WR would be a good move I think. Although the WR would be a bit tricky but doable with that lens.

I agree with the "what's better about it than the 18-135" crowd. While pentax is not known for very fast glass, this new lens speed is quite useless (IMHO). With very sharp (and fast) glass available from other sellers (looking at you Sigma 18-35 1.4), what motivation will pentaxians have for this new piece of glass from pentax?

I'm hoping that this will be the new "kit lens" to replace the venerable 18-55.

With that, I also hope they will release a companion * (star) version with a constant 2.8. Or even better, a veritable 1.8-2.8 and sharp as hell, k-mount only. That would be a piece of glass pentaxians could brag about.

Come on Ricoh, stop making lame duck glass for us to put onto amazing DSLRs like the K-3. We need both amazing bodies AND amazing glass.

Just my $.02

When Pentax originally put this lens on the roadmap, they teased us that it would be a * lens:

http://www.us.ricoh-imaging.com/files/pdf/lens_roadmap.pdf

Even though they removed the * on later roadmaps, this lens is at the other extreme! It's quite reasonable for people to be disappointed - one would naturally expect a mid-range lens, of course. How can you announce you're going to make a Lamborghini, and then end up delivering a Nissan Sentra?

FYI, we now know the tentative name of at least one of Pentax's three new lenses from the roadmap. The standard zoom will be a HD PENTAX-DA 16-85mm F3.5-5.6ED DC WR:

Maybe they moved the * to the Large Diameter Zoom.

Um, you are aware this lens will be probably be sold for less than 1/3 of that Sigma price? They are not only not in the same league, they are different sport.....

Nikon has a 16-85mm 3.5-5.6 that is a good performer. Without the OIS Pentax should be able to make a more compact and cheaper one. This might not be everybody's piece of cake, but for many starting shooters it will be a great more versatile lens than the 18-55 2mm at the wide end is a lot and 30mm extra at the long end means you can use it for head shot portraits very well.

Well, I was hoping this would compete with the Sigma 17-70mm F/2.8-4 Contemporary. Guess not. 16mm at the wide end is very nice, but it's indeed hard to see why they'd make this F/3.5-5.6...

I think being internal focusing (IF) would really add to this lens...

why not f2.8?
because that would probably make it the same size as the new 645 28-45mm zoom lens....

With some pretty nasty surprises hiding the in the Bokeh, didn't you read my review?

I don't see why anyone would buy this over the 18-135?
Makes no sense as anything but a replacement kit lens. If true that is nice, it sounds like an excellent kit lens but definitely not what I was hoping for.
16-85 f/4 and I would pre-order. 16-85 f/3.5-5.6? Not for me. Once again we see that enthusiasts and semi-pros are not Ricoh target market.

Hopefully there is more to come, but I have to say my confidence is really diminished.
