Who can decipher the unmarked switches on the two monster zooms? On-lens AF/MF switch? In-lens SR? Zoom clamp (super tele, on right)?

Zoom clamp for sure (or better: zoom lock because I don't think it has user-selectable friction).

The Pentax 28-45mm 645 lens with optical SR should give us an indication about the function of the switches.

One would certainly be the AF/MF switch. The other would be either a focus limiter or a OS on/off switch, which would infer the FF is 1) real, and 2) does not have IBIS.
Both lenses look really sexy.

The middle big lens (the ~450mm one) seems to be of the IF (Internal Focusing) type. So easy to make it fully weather resistant (the gold ring). The third one, the 70-200mm version, is not and that's why there's a zoom lock on it.

Don't you have the two lenses confused? I would expect the ~100-400 to extend while zooming and the 70-200 to remain constant. I also expect both to feature IF.

The biggest questions will be with regard to optical performance. If this lens out performs the 18-135, it certainly could be a new kit lens for the K3/K5 II.

I guess the problem most folks have is that Pentax is filling a hole in the line up that no one but them knew they had.

You are right; I got confused due to the lack of information imprinted on both lenses

If we look at the DA560 which has two switches in the same position as the "70-200" gold-ring lens, they are focus limiter and MF/AF. I cant see Pentax ditching SR, FF or not.

With the bulk of the 70-200 I am guessing it's a constant f2.8, wonder what those switches are for though, 1 is for AF/MF as per existing DA* lenses, what's the other one for? OIS? Focus Limiter?

As for the 100-450, again 2 switches on the left hand side of the lens, same question as above, but what looks like a focus lock on the right so it's not a IF lens.

And crucially, how's the optical performance stack up against offering from other manufacturer

Don't see why there is so much negativity to this lens.
Here is a lens that covers wide landscapes/cityscapes at 16mm, go street and candids at 18-50mm and portraits at 85mm. (ie. FF equivalent of 24mm, 28mm-75mm, 127mm)
My go to kit on aps-c is the DA15, FA31ltd, 77ltd.on FF, I use the K24, A50, K85, usually enough to cover most things I want to take on my travels.
So the focal length this lens offers is really good.
Of course we'd all like it to be f4 or f2.8, but often, smaller size is a very understated thing too.

This lens looks very interesting IMO... With any zoom there will always be complaints... The 20-40mm took a sledging from some quarters, so did the 16-50mm DA* and the 18-135mm

If this thing is light/small with reasonable corner performance I'll be tempted

Until I saw these lenses, I was seriously tossing up the possibility of getting a D750 and holy trinity of Nikon zooms.
That temptation no longer exists for me. Pentaxian forever!

Don't worry, I noticed it. I just haven't worked out a use for it yet
The third switch (to the right of the round button) will be the zoom lock.

The last two are nice looking big lenses.
They probably weigh a ton, but if they help prepare the ground for a FF, it will be worth it.

Let's hope that Pentax will accomodate lens sr as well als ibis. For long lenses in lens stabilisation is better. So just turn of sr when detecting a stabilized lens. You would have the best of both worlds and Tamron/Sigma wouldn't have to omit it from their lenses for Pentax any more. When really adventurous they could even try to combine lens and body sr, for super stabilisation.
