It is also how Sigma designs its lenses. Maybe the long tele zoom is just a rebadged Sigma.
Good point. Their latest 70-200 shows the same layout, and the 150-600, 50-500, 150-500, etc all show focus rings in the back.

The interesting thing when looking at the DA* is that the body barrel is straight, except at the lens mount. With all other 70-200s that I've seen, they have body bulges (Tamron 70-200 bulges at the front, the Sigma 70-200 bulges in the middle). I wonder what that means.

Does anyone have the link for the 70/80-200mm f2.8 patent that Ricoh filed recently?

Why is that people seems to think every new Pentax lens is a rebadged Tamron/Sigma/Tokina? Yes there had been a few rebadged lenses 18-250/18-270 comes to mind, but the implication of Pentax being unable to come up with their own lens formula is just ludicrous.

I don't believe the implication is that Pentax can't "come up with their own lens formula", just that there are economic advantages to re-badging existing good lenses in certain segments. You're freeing R&D for other projects, and you're reducing competition due to non-compete agreements.

Thanks man! I just did a quick comparison between the new 70-200? and just based on my first impressions, it is way too short to be the same lens as in that patent. Though, I may have done something wrong.

I think this is a patent filed by Ricoh and its optic formula

There is also some discussion about it on photo rumors: Pentax patent for a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens | Photo Rumors

and on a blog which I will not name here because we don't like him but he says "Besides, this new lens should include an in-lens IS (or SR in Pentax' terminology), as the image circle just fits and there is no spare space for the body SR anymore."

I'm assuming you're talking about WheatLow.

so, dots to dots, if they're true, then the old Sigma 70-200 that was discontinued recently could've been done because thr new tele lenses were made in collaboration with Sigma.

I wouldn't be bothered if that's the case. Sigma's been breaking ground in lenses recently; and Pentax has partnered with another third party (Tokina) before.

Otherwise, an all-original design wouldn't hurt.

I have to say, I'm pretty excited about these new (tentative) announcements. Pentax/Ricoh really seems to be addressing perceived gaps in their lens line-up now. If not for the 16-85, then certainly for the two telezooms. Together with the 300mm/4, 1.4 TC and 560mm/5.6, it's starting to look as if Pentax can be a very solid telephoto system too (that's actually an area where APS-C is the preferred format). Canon and Nikon systems still have an edge, but only in the I-have-to-sell-my-kid(ney)-to-afford-them price category.

But I am hoping they will reveal the full names of all 3 lenses in the days to come. It would be interesting to see the basic specs on them.

I'd like to see this lens on the K-S1 as part of the kit. Would be a meaningful differentiator from the 18-55 kits from Canon, Nikon, et. al.

If memory serves me correctly, Pentax has also partnered with Tampon for their optics previously as well. Though, I'm not sure if it was just con-licencing or actually con-operation.

I'm not sure how I feel about this.
