SWEEEEEEEEET.....!!!!!

Like the 16-85. Alreday on my buyers list

And I bet the large Aperture is a 2.8 lens, with something in the 60~70-200 range.

Anxious to see the official specs and price.

.
The looks is excellent! I like it!
I hope it's a constant f/2.8 lens and not another f/4...

Hmm, I wonder what the second switch is about? Focus limiter?

I presume so. There is a focus limiter in the same position (compared to the AF/MF switch) on DA 560mm.

There is also a focus limiter on all OEM 70-200mm lenses I know of: Canon EF f/2.8 and f/4, Nikkor f/2.8 and f/4, Sony FE f/4 for E mount cameras and f/2.8 and f/4 for A mount cameras.

Initially I saw the announcement and thought it would be a new improved kit lens - which would be a bit of a standout. But the added controls mark it as more than that - and the window is like the FA series distance scale windows, which could be convenient. Certainly that's a good way to keep WR and give you the distance scale.

A zoom with FA architecture under the plastic, this could be a harbinger of something more. 16mm on FF would be pretty wide, and useful. If that's what it is.

16-85 - OK, but is seems that the rest two are still under development since there are not actual photos from Photokina.
Or maybe they just don't want to give away that they are for FF. They may be done, but just showing the shell at the show.

The 16-85 is announced as an improvement over the kit lens, as the minimum apertures suggests.

3.5-5.6 an improvement? this is your typical kit lens aperture by any standards. and remember, lens specs, seldom are what they claim to be, specially with kit lenses.

If that's how a kit lens is defined then I guess the DA 560 is one, too.

My dear friend this is a completely different beast we are talking about. This is a fixed aperture lens, and at 859mm equivalent in FF: very good. It is not the same to a variable aperture lens. Variable aperture lenses contains a lot more of compromises and wishful specs. In today's world though; there are some variable aperture lenses that are pretty. pretty good (exceptions), but most lenses that have variable aperture are very good to up to 8x10 size; @ about 2 to 4 stops from the maximum aperture. So let's no compare apples and oranges.

The current 18-55 is based on a design that's been used for so long. Other manufacturers have produced different iterations of their kit lenses too; Pentax has just upgraded the housing (added WR). This one uses an entirely new optical design of course, with better coatings, and an in-lens AF engine too. So yes, it is an improvement. Not everything can be based on maximum aperture to define "improvement"

Here's my take on the gold-ring lens' size with a simple superimposed image. Scaled with the current longest lens in Pentax lineup, the 60-250.

(scaling is not very accurate, as the angle in which the new gold-ringed lens wasn't a pure side view like the 60-250)

very big chance that it's a constant f2.8! that thing is FAT haha and probably has a front element around 72mm.

So, you assume that the lens will fall in the latter category (very good up to 8x10 @ 2 to 4 stops down?), based on it having a variable aperture with numbers equal to the kit lens?

Latest news I heard or rather read here Photokina 2014 • Pentaxians :

"Lt. Aussage des Mitarbeiters ein 80 - 200 mit durchgängig 2.8 und ein 100 - 400 ohne Angabe der Lichtstärke." ~ according to a member of staff a 80-200 with constant 2.8 and a 100-400 without any information about the apertures.
