16-85 vs 18-135 size comparision [image]

A little montage I've made:

I wish the new lens could be smaller, or faster...

It's a good sign it's bigger, that would imply better IQ. Having "just" comparable IQ would make it kind of redundant.

Wider FOV means a larger lens, especially in a zoom.

Were the 2 shots even on the same scale to make the comparison reasonable?

Nonetheless, 16mm is a nice FL to have for a walkabout zoom , better than 18mm imo.

Likely the OP scaled it based on the lens mount, which is the only consistent thing between lenses.

Exactly.

One of the original images was scaled to match the other. Reference was the mount.
It even was easy, because both photos look like they were taken from the same angle and with the same FOV. They match perfectly.
Here they are side-by-side:

One thing I already love about this lens is what looks like an incredibly smooth zoom ring with a very generous amount of travel. I'm so over my 16-50mm in this regard, the zoom ring has virtually no travel and isn't smooth in the least, something that cannot be said for the other Pentax standard zooms I (and my father) own (18-55mm WR, A 35-105mm, F35-70mm)!

I would indeed expect the lens to be larger to accommodate 16mm vs 18mm. I wonder how they will compare at the tele end, i.e. 85mm vs 135mm. Of course that question cannot be answered yet...

I expect the new lens will be noticeably poorer at 86-135

For me a more interesting question is how will they compare both at 85 mm.

Worse from 86-135, but infinitely better 16-18

LOL

I meant in terms of size, not IQ

Seems like maybe the IQ could be an upgrade from 18-135... will be tempted to replace it...
