Called Ricoh to confirm and they said they were not exhibiting at the Photoplus Expo in NYC (again) this year....

Not doomed, but not doing much to let people in the USA know about the good cameras the rest of the company is making.

Smart decision. The show draws around 22,000 visitors, a fraction of whom are interested in Pentax. A decent-sized booth likely costs $20+k just for space on the floor. Add to that the cost of the booth, shipping it, assembling it, and housing staff in NYC for the better part of a week, and the price to reach just a fraction of 22,000 visitors is very high.

They're better off spending that time and money on marketing or increasing their retail presence.

I talked to the US exec VP at Photokina. The reason they aren't exhibiting at Photoplus is that the promo budget is better spent elsewhere given the audience at the show, which makes sense IMO. He did add, however, that things may change in the future and that Pentax may return to the show then

For shows, they are only interesting for some reasons:

- many visitors (100k+)
- showing new gear (if you have)
- getting mediaattention (so not al shows are the same)

I guess this show isn't fitting in.

Given all the destructive criticism I see coming from the US it is a wonder Ricoh even bothers with the US market.

Even if Ricoh had the largest most elaborate booth at Photo Plus somebody would be complaining it wasn't good enough for x number of reasons or Ricoh would have better spent their money elsewhere or with a smaller booth.

I think exhibits just aren't as important anymore. Except for meeting other interested folks or talking with professionals, why should I bother visiting such a beehive? If I'm interested in a given product I will find information about it online, as soon as it's gotten presented to public. You can't really judge a products quality at a booth, either, just get a quick glance.

The only benefit, in case of cameras, is a hands-on to get the feel of something. But for that I can just as well go to a local store. Or order it online even, since consumer laws give me the option to return it within 14 days.
