That would be interesting. They launched the Q with the smallest sensor, because the 1/1.7" BSI one wasn't ready. And what if the 1/1.7" was nothing but an intermediate step, their target being 2/3 all along?
We'll see; for now I'm not willing to bet on this being true.

Three steps of Q sensor increases, if true it is both unconventional and quite cool. Perhaps 2/3 is the threshold of what is possible with current lens design?

I don't think so, at least if they continue SR developpement.
None of the curent Q lenses would work with bigger sensors than 1/1.7" : that seem obvious when looking at them from the rear.
Imho this new licence is for some high end compact zoom, labelled Ricoh and competing with Fuji's X-yy line.

I wonder if they could do some kind of multi-aspect thing with a slightly larger sensor, like Panasonic has been doing in its LX series? That would be really useful.

Some lenses show distortions, and less than stellar image quality even on 1/1.7" sensor.
So if they really want to make a 2/3 sensored Q, they also want to promote all current lenses into toy lenses, with distortions, and now with vignetting too?
The plan is brilliant.

  1. Which ones?
  2. Sample images?
I really want to know which of my Q lenses I should ashcan.

They'll have 4:

APS-C

Larger than APS-C but smaller than APS-H

Larger than APS-H but smaller than FF

FF

Just to annoy you

It's not that bigger. The Q sensor is 1/1.7" and 2/3" is also 1/1.5". And 8.8 ÷ 7.6 = 6.6 ÷ 5.7 = less than 16% bigger.

But probably enough for the current lenses to show heavy vignetting.

The Q mount and its connectors could accommodate a 1" sensor (just).

If this is the case, then why would Pentax want to bring out a Q with this sensor? They'd have to redesign all existing lenses to be able to sell that camera, for only a slight increase in sensor size, for the camera to be able to sell. And they'd confuse a lot of people. I don't see how it's worth it.

I have to believe that this sensor is for a fixed lens camera body. They have too much invested in the current Q line and they (Pentax) are already too constrained in getting new lenses out for the 645, K DA and the Q. Their bodies are doing well, but at the expense of the old Asahi optical reputation (which has been essentially lost). They need to regain their optical reputation - as the lenses tend to support the bodies in terms of profitability. Also, the lenses tend to have a longer shelf / production life as opposed to the constant redesign cycle of the body/sensor combination.

A pretty accurate rule of thumb is 1 sensor "inch" = 16 mm.

Yeah i am starting to think this was for something like mx-2. Other rumours talk about such a camera as well
