That's a little bit... bizarre.

The perfect selfie camera, I guess, for those that like such a thing. But quite pricey for a camera with only one function.
Creating 360° videos does sound interesting, but it doesn't look like they'd stay fully interactive after processing.

I guess the story is now that the v2 Theta does video. From DPR:
'Ricoh has announced the Theta M15, a second version of its 360-degree camera. The M15 adds video recording to its portfolio, with clips up to three minutes.'

I like the gallery of existing Theta samples, some videos of similar stuff would be awesome.

It's also interesting to see this from their press release:
QuoteQuote:
From the 14th November 2014, an API and SDK (beta version) will be released on theta360.com site to allow users to develop their own apps and add new exciting capabilities to their RICOH THETA.
I wish they would do this for all Ricoh cameras, including the K-3.

The API and SDK is big, big stuff. As recently as April, 2013 Ricoh really didn't want to do that. But Ricoh has a habit of experimenting on satellite products before it introduces something on the mainline stuff. MX-1 with hinged LCD; WG-30 with built-in WiFi; API and SDK on Theta v2 . . . . .

Don't be surprised to see something with 4K and all the other video bells soon - then API, SDK and video at the bleeding edge for their flagship cameras.

Gosh, I wonder what could make a FF Pentax camera different?

At CP+ two years ago Ricoh was showing the "hammerhead" prototype. I asked the rep whether they were working on video and he gave a very definite "yes". Video is why this design has value over stitching apps and other solutions. I can imagine a future where adventurers record their antics with one of these on their helmets and then people watch them on 360 Youtube with their Oculus type VR headsets. Perhaps more immediately, Google Maps could have little 360 videos of famous places, since they already have the capability to add Theta images.

Hope that they continue to evolve the hardware and software for the Theta. It's getting interesting...

You can already do this on the Nintendo Wii U with the gamepad. There are 360 degree videos where you can hold the gamepad up and look around in any direction. My first thought in seeing the original Theta was, "if this did video, it would be perfect for" that Wii U feature

Ouch, just read the specs on the B&H pre-order page. Only 15fps video! I guess thats your answer for "M15". What a waste. Maybe if the still image quality is appreciably better...

A report about the launch event in Japan (in Japanese). Haven't had a chance to read it yet.

The now JK Imaging Kodak has released its own 360-degree "action" cam, which in addition to 16mp stills does 30 and 60fps video: Kodak Digital Cameras | SP360 Action Cam So it looks like Ricoh now has company in the 360-degree market, though it seems that the Kodak is positioned somewhat differently.

I've seen the sample video on their website, and I think that it could be an interesting product.
It looks very versatile, because you can shoot "360°", front/rear, a dome etc.
Video specs are kinda average: no 4K and if you want 60fps you've got to use 720p...

Agreed; plus they have a few mounts for it for action purposes. Kodak has a clear vision of it as an action cam, whereas the Theta is more of a novelty without a clear audience or purpose. Perhaps this Kodak will actually reveal such an audience for the Theta and ultimately help bolster it.

Well, maybe they intended the target to be real estate agents...
