What I find interesting, they published MTF charts - the first/only lens which has them.
Mmm they did not publish MTF charts since a looooong time (I think they actually did but way way back in good old times).

I still kind of think/hope that it's a FF, because I'm hunting for signs of FF on the horizon.

If Pentax do roll with FF, they will need a kit zoom for it. And at the moment there is nothing in the current Pentax lineup, or the huge mockup lenses at Photokina, that would do the kit lens zoom job on Pentax full-frame.

Canon has the 24-105 f4 L as a kit lens, Nikon is using the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G or even the 24-120 f4, Sony A7's are using the FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 FE. A Pentax FF would have ????? as a kit lens ... If it's not this 16-85, they will probably need something similar.

Those are the old [FF] models that won't support AF. What about the new HD Pentax DA AF 1.4X AW? Is it not compatible?

I don't recall Asahi Pentax ever publishing MTF charts, period. Some of the Takumar era catalogs have a distortion chart, but not MTF. This would seem to be a big shift in their longstanding thinking and culture, and it means that everyone will now be able to compare their lenses against those by Canon and Nikon.

I presume that the MTF is for the lens at maximum aperture (as Nikon). Anyway, the MTF looks good--very close to the Nikkor DX 16-85 (slightly better wide, slightly worse tele) and better than the closest Canon equivalent. Contrast is good, resolution is good, though (as expected) resolution declines a good bit towards the corners, and the lens probably has a decent amount of lateral CA.

Here's the Pentax:

The Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR:

I just wouldn't make too much of a deal about the price. What the DA 18-135 release at and it sells new for 350 now.

(...)
The MTF curves show that the lens is dedicated to APS-C: look at what's left at 14mm from the centre.

No way, FF. Even for marketing reasons, they would not release it now.

They are usually made with the lens at its widest aperture and then at f/8 - that is the standard testing procedure.

That's technically true, but it's an "if they want to show us that" case. With only one set of MTF measurements, they can only at one aperture value. We know that Nikon (which also shows only one set of measurements, unlike Canon which provides both as you describe) does it at maximum aperture, so and it seems likely that Pentax is doing the same (though there is no explicit claim of what aperture value these MTFs are at).

Look at the Canon counterpart, that is not recent nor even sealed...

That's a good question. Why PR doesn't publish this data (I mean the MTF charts).
I have wrote in DPR about this question and have heard noting reasonable.
The MTF charts are consider as the most objective way to qualify a lens.
But sometimes one have to be attentive with them. It depends a lot of the manner of measuring.

Perhaps the other lenses were made with more subjective qualities in mind? Then, publishing MTF data would put them at a disadvantage.

Just because the Canon version is overpriced too doesn't mean the Pentax version is not. I think they're both overpriced. Look at Nikon's version instead if you want.

Oh, and shouting 'WRONG' doesn't make your opinion correct either.. just makes you look harsh.

As is customary, the introductory price is high (although not too bad, IMO) and will come down next year.

If it follows the DA20-40, then in about half a year it'll be $400.
